Second trip out with the 28FKS

Second time out with the "new to us" '06 28FKS. I have a couple of questions. The outside temp was close to freezing and I noticed it was quite chilly sitting on the couch which is in the slide out. I put my hand down behind the couch on the metalwork and was amazed at how cold the metal frame for the couch was. Are these slides not very well insulated? Is there anyway to improve the R factor without tearing the slide apart? Question #2. The furnace cuts in and stays on long enough to get the area pretty warm, then it goes a long time before coming on again so of course the temp has dropped a fair amount. With the old thermostats, you could adjust the anticipator setting so the furnace come on more often and held the temp more even. These newer models are all printed circuit. Any suggestions here? Question #3 I have noticed some other manufacturerers of TT's and 5er's have awnings over the slides. Our Jayco does not. What do all of you do to clean off the top of the slides before travel? A ladder and broom or is this not important? Would it help prevent seal damage? Thanks for your time.

I can't address the insulation issue, but many have replaced the thermostat with a digital version. I plan to do that soon. I started carrying a 6 ft stepladder now that we have the HTT with slideout. I always sweep the slide roof before retracting. Nuts or leaves should not harm the seal because it's raised a couple inches from the roof, but a small branch or twigs could mess with the seal. Also the nuts and leaves could roll/move off the top into your living area in travel. We have a long bed F150 for a TV, so carrying the ladder is no big deal.

Regarding the slide... we did not purchase a slide topper, but made sure our tt had a ladder installed. When camping under trees, either Don or I will climb up on the roof to clean off the slide top. While up there, we do a quick check of the roof and seals while we are at it. After retracting the slide, we will take a towel and dry off any moisture that may be up there :)

So I gather I need not concern myself about tromping around on the roof of my TT. I have always been leary of doing that with previous campers, etc. I know it is supposed to be a "walk-on" roof , but is it really?
