I am heading off to Yuma on or about the 28th of December. My wife got tired of me wining and sniveling about winters, so she is kicking me out for a couple of months while she stays home and having the bathroom gutted and re-built and doesn't want me in the way.
As I like to ride my bike and play in the pool, I am right in my glory. I reactivated my TracFone which will kick in once I cross the border and this plan works for me.
I bought my medical insurance this morning and for anyone from Canada who want a great deal on insurance, then give Travel Medical Plan 1-800-790-7018 a call. I am getting a plan for 68 days plus if I cross the border at any other time of the year up to 30 days, which cost me 279 bucks. I have high blood pressure which is normal under medication but there is only a 10% surcharge. There is a 200 buck deductible on this policy.
I also bought the Good Sam road assistance plan which cost 79 bucks. I just don't want to sit at the side of the highway if I do have problem.
I still have to find a place in Yuma but I made a couple of calls and it looks like finding a spot will not be a problem.:D

One year in the 90's when we had a truck/camper set-up, Don had a small window of time to join me on a cross country trek where I had most of the summer. We decided that I would take off on my own for three weeks and he would fly to join me in St Louis. Did a lot of morning bicycle riding, and reading. By the end of the three weeks on my own and no one to really converse with, I got pretty good at having long conversations with myself! LOL ;)
Have a great trip! :)

It sounds like you are good to go. From the looks of things here your wife will be the only person in Alberta by Christmas.

I will hopefully be in Yuma by the first of Jan. I am looking for a spot right now and have a couple of folks in Yuma giving me a hand. I bring my meds with me but may have to make a run to Algodones for some spare glasses and maybe some Kahlua for my wife as she is being such a good sport about my going. I will post when I have a definite location.

Full price for the same meds in Algodones is less than my co-pay at home so I stock up on a years worth at a time....my copay is $45/100 and in Algo full price is $15/100

I pay $25.00 for a 3 month supply on my Blue Cross Plan, and I get to write it off on taxes (well some).

I have found a place in Yuma. I will be renting a lot in the Los Amigoes neighbourhood just off North Frontage Road. The lady who owns the property cannot use it anymore for health reasons and was happy to let me rent it for two months. It used to have a Park Model on it and was one if not the largest lot in this community, so I feel real lucky. My spot backs onto the community hall with pool and hot tub.

Went out to the farm today and picked up my 5th wheel so that I could load it up and get ready for my trip to Yuma on the 28th. I was really interested to see if I had any mice but I find that my packs of poison were untouched and all I could see were a bunch of dead fly's. I had one low tire and with the help of 2 Great Pyranise ? farm dogs Sampson and Delila, I got my unit up and running with very little snow to worry about and brought it home to pack and maybe a little cleaning.
I must remember to remove those poison packs as they look a little like cocaine packages and that is all I would need when I cross the border especially as I am retired law enforcement.

You never know these days, besides I would not want to go through all the hassle of having to explain what it is. I hear that our governments are going to make it easier to pass over the border (not that I have ever had a problem) but the new rules won't kick in until sometime next year,

I am all packed and ready to go first thing in the morning (28th). My only concern is that they are predicting wind for tomorrow and it could get ugly, but I will make it a short day tomorrow and overnight in Great Falls MT which is 5 hours from my house. It looks like weather (other than wind) will not be a factor for my trip. I will try to post updates as I overnight in campgrounds with Wi Fi.

If you come down Az 95 be sure and blow your horn at the first stop light as you enter Parker Az. We are staying at the Blue Water Park.

I arrived at Frank's campground in Great Falls Mt. at about 1.00 PM and could have driven longer but the winds were unbelievable and it was bare knuckle driving all the way, so I decided to stop. I had no problems crossing the border except I managed to take the wrong road as I left the border crossing and ran into a female US border guard who more or less accused me of being stupid (which I am) and I had to go through the hoops again. I guess I turned onto the truck road but my excuse was the sun was in my eyes and I missed the turn.
I will try to leave very early in the morning and get a good day's drive in depending on the wind.

I usually stop in Parker to fuel up if that one service station is not too busy. It is hard to get into that lot when you are pulling a 34 ft. 5th wheel.

Super Fuels can be a regular zoo at times. I try and stay away from that one.

Well when the wife finally retires in 2012 the plan is to be South this time of the year.
Not sure yet where we will winter but it will be where it is warm although it was 63 here in Reno today. Thinking Arizona, New Mexico or deep down in Texas.
Plan on ordering the new 5er early in 2012 and getting acquainted with it before really hitting the road.

Well I finally made it. It took me a few days to get internet and although it is very slow, it is better than nothing.
This was without a doubt the worst trip I have taken. I hit wind before I crossed the US border and ended up staying overnight in Great Falls Mont. and spent the night rocking and rolling all night because of the wind at a campground. Got ready to go the following morning but almost had to stay an extra day because the wind came up at 5.00 AM and it was hard to even walk. Wind let up about 6.00 AM so I took a chance and left. I was going to take the road through Boulder Mont. and come out at Dillon Mont., back onto the I-15 but missed the turn-off and went over the Pass where a rain, sleet, snow storm hit the area the night before and the roads were a real mess, but once the sun got higher in the sky, it got a little better. I found out the road from Boulder to Dillon was not much better.
I stayed at a great Good Sam campground in Pocatello Idaho and did have a good night.
I did plan on staying in Mesquite NV but missed both turn-offs thanks to my GPS and ended up just prior to Vegas where I attempted to stay at that State Park (road to the fire or something) but after driving in about 12 miles and paying the entrance fee with assurances that there was lots of room with full hook-ups, I find out there was no room for the size of my Jayco, so back to the highway where I stopped at the Sinclair truck stop and asked if I could crash in the huge overflow parking lot. I was given permission and decided to hit the sack about 7.00 PM only to find that this station was run by the local Indian Reservation and they sold Fireworks and it looks like they like to advertise because right at 7.00 PM they started advertising and this continued right up to 4.00 AM when I decided to leave with no sleep. The only good thing was that I did get through Vegas before rush hour. I finally got to Yuma about noontime on the 31st.
Weather has been great the last few days and I am enjoying the pool, hot tub and my bike.

Well my trip to Yuma is over, I left on Thurs. morning and arrived home about 10.00 PM Sat. night. The trip was fairly uneventful except for some bad roads just north of Leeds Utah, saw a couple of vehicles that had spun off the road with one upside down and emergency services had just arrived and looks like someone may have been trapped. I was going to pull off the roads until they cleared but by the time I found a rest area I was out of it. I hit some major wind in Montana just south of the border and even some of the big rigs were pulling off so I decided to do the same and it gave me time to straighten out my rig, have some tea, washed my floors and dishes (not in the same water), spent a little over an hour parked until the wind died to a reasonable rate and arrived at the border with only two vehicles in front of me. I brought back well over my limit for booze which I had promised as gifts to people and felt sure that I would have to pay. Customs guy smiled and said "Have a good day" and I arrived home 3 hours later to a minnie snow storm.
The only thing I complained about was the cost of fuel. Diesel prices are all over the map and I can see a real problem coming up not only with tourism but the overall cost of commodities.

They are now getting the snow, but when I came through on Saturday the landscape was brown and I know the farmers on both sides of the border need the moisture.

They are pretty worried in Bozeman. The economy and culture depends a lot on snow for sport and to replenish the lakes, streams and water table for agriculture. Hopefully it will be a wet spring.
