tawoo, since you are ex Navy, did you retire from the Navy or have a Military ID Card? If so, some of the bases have great campgrounds right on the beaches, etc. MacDill AFB in Tampa, and Pensacola NAS are two great ones that come to mind. Don't have to worry about the winter visitors tying them up as much either.

namusmc55,
I have a military disability from the service. Nothing serious just lost half of my hearing being too close to F4 Phantom jet engine noise while in Viet Nam.
Would they accept that?

You have to be 100% disabled. Also those sites fill up fast in the winter since many are first come first serve.

Florida
I've only stayed at Fort Wilderness in Fl but no matter the state (we've camped in MD, FL, PA, VA, NC and SC) most good campgrounds fill up ahead of time making sporadic stops difficult.

We moved to Florida 6 years ago. Can't take the northern winters any more. There are many state and county parks that are great. The further south you go, the better the weather. The Ft. Pickens in the panhandle (part of Gulf Islands National Seashore) is beautiful but in the winter, it can get cold. Same is true all the way down thru Orlando area. Jonathan Dickinson is very popular. Also, there are a few state parks and campgrounds in the keys that are great. We have John Prince County Park that we park in to load and unload our camper as it is near our condo. It is nice, clean and close to the Lake Worth Beach. Depends on what you like to do. Have fun.
