The in-laws live in Asheville, so we have been about 15 times. Sometimes camping sometimes not. We have stayed at Mama Gerties--very pretty but nothing for kids to do there.

We loved The Asheville East KOA. It is close to the highway and there is train noise--but it is very pretty once you get inside there and the sites along the river are very long and nice. Much to do for kids and very nice management.

You must eat at Tupelo Honey Cafe in town.

The Arboretum is very nice

The Nature Center is very nice.

Jack O'the Wood is great for bluegrass and drinks.

Please check out our blog--we have written about so many things in and around Asheville.

Been to Asheville twice, and plan on going back. +1 on Mama Gerties, beautiful campsite with nice views and they just finished another portion higher up the mountain. There is little to do for the children, but we went to see the Biltmore and the other sights around Asheville. We stayed at Campfire Lodgings also. Campfire Lodgings has stunning views of the French Broad River and the Smokies in general. Word of caution, the access road is about a lane and a half wide...call before you start the ascent. There is less to do for the kids at Campfire Lodgings than at Mama Gerties and the campground is situated along a ridgeline. The back end of our MH was literally 5.5 feet off the sloping ground. My wife and I loved both spots and plan on returning to both, especially in the fall as the leaves change.
