Campgrounds in Key West

We will be visiting family, considering places to retire, and some vacation for most of the summer in Florida and are interested in going to Key West. Would anyone have information about camping in the Keys? Places to camp, things to do, etc.

Thanks.

I've camped at John Pennekamp sp, Bahia Honda sp, and a few others. Google Florida campgrounds and you'll find plenty of campgrounds. Love to camp in the Fl keys in Oct-Dec. State campgrounds fill up fast. Lots of things to do, deep sea fishing, in shore fishing, snorkeling and dive trips. Good look and enjoy

We do a trip to the keys every year, actually heading out next week. We usually stay in one of the state parks toward the middle- Long key, Bahia honda, Curry hammock - so that we can travel up and down and be fairly close to everything. All state parks are good but you will have to reserve as soon as they are available 11 months out. Boyds is a private campground and the closest to Key West. Very nice and recommended. There's another private campground that is good around Long Key but I just can't remember the name. State parks will have water and electricity but no sewer.

Lot of variety in the keys depending on what you're looking for. Key west is interesting and you do want to visit if you've never been. Lots of good restaurants and museums. Do the Hemingway and Truman houses. Definitely do the butterfly museum. However Key west is also very crowded and touristy. We usually go one day and we're done. Of course you could just find your favorite bar stool and hang out! We prefer the more natural keys. Hiking, biking, kayaking, snorkel or scuba, fishing and boating. It's all available up and down the keys.
Hope you have fun.

The DW & I just booked the middle leg of a 16 day trip around Fl at Boyd's Campground, Key West. We'll be there 4 nights in April 2017. Having never been to KW this is the focal point of my retirement trip. Being close to KW was our deciding factor. We'll also overnight at John Pennekamp SP in Key Largo after departing Anastasia SP in St. Augustine, Fl towards KW.
