camping by Mt. Rushmore?

We want to head out to the Mt. Rushmore area next July. Any recommendations about where to camp near by? There are several seemingly nice cg's listed with Good Sam but some personal opinions from the forum would be appreciated. Thanks all, and have a short winter and good camping to come.

It has been several years ago but we stayed at palmer gulch KOA. At that time it was ok, but like I said several years ago. I have read some good things about Rafter J Bar Ranch and have reservations there for 2016 so hopefully its good.

We stayed at Rafter J Bar Ranch last year. We were in the area called "The Island". Definitely would go back and stay in the same area. Take time for the Badlands too. There is a Minute Man missile control center nearby the Badlands. You would definitely need reservations for a tour. Minuteman Missile National Historic Site (U.S. National Park Service) . The is an adequate RV campground in Wall (close to Wall Drug) that works for an overnight to visit the Badlands and the missile site.

I believe that is the section we made our reservation for. I believe someone on another forum site recommended that area as well. Will have to check that minuteman info out. This will be a stop on our way home from Yellowstone for us. Thanks for the info.

Stay away from Custer's Gulch RV park & campground. It's a very nice campground, but the owners are very rude and not friendly at all.

Rafter J

Two summers ago we stayed at Rafter J, it's a great place to spend a week. The spots are quiet and clean and each spot has full hookups. It's close to everything. Our two girls say that it was the best trip EVER. Enjoy!!

You won't be disappointed at Rafter J. We have camped there and stayed in the cabins. Hill City is a great central town to everything in the Black Hills and as close as you can get to Mt. Rushmore.

This is why I love you guys and this forum. Thanks for the tip, the Rafter J does look great, but the KOA was offering a free shuttle to the nightly fireworks which is very tempting to not have to deal with traffic. Now if I can only get my boss to approve a weeks vacation next July this early. 13 months to retirement, I can't wait...

This summer we stayed at Big Pine campground just outside of custer. Owners are very friendly. Help you get parked, and will deliver firewood to your site. All they had left was a double occupant site, but they gladly accommodated us with that at single site price. We were there three nights, not nearly long enough.

We did Mt. Rushmore last summer. We stayed in Custer State Park. It was convenient to many attractions in the area. Beautiful park and a lot of ranger talks. I highly recommend it.

Alot depends on what you want for amenities. I like to stay right in Custer SP. The CG on the far western edge of the park. Has all your basics. What I like it is easy jumping grounds for any activities you might want to do, and there is a lot you can do.

X2 for Rafter J, really enjoyed the campground and especially the area.

If you weren't aware, there is a website I use all the time called campgroundreviews.com. Not all are in there, but it's been very helpful for us over the years. As with any user submitted reviews, you have to weigh the different opinions, but it's usually pretty clear what opinions are closer to what I would think. I highly recommend it as one of the tools in the tool box.

Rafter J Bar in Hill City's, SD. This will be our third year at that campground and we have really enjoyed it. Close to Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer.

We have stay with Wild Bill's south of Deadwood for the reasonable prices during the rally. Rafter J has a great reputation but we have not tried them yet.

We agree

Just wanted to be sure you are aware, there are not nightly fireworks, there aren't fireworks at all anymore. There used to be an amazing show for the 4th of July, but it was stopped a few years ago . However, there is a nightly lighting ceremony.

We absolutely loved Custer State Park. We specifically stayed in the Game Lodge campground. Reserve online and early!

Wish I knew that. We would have liked to see them again. The first time we went, they lit them off during a heavy fog. All it did was go boom and turn the fog different colors. Never saw a single firework that night, just the colors of fog.

Big Pine the summer of 2015. Smaller campground, super nice. Would go back in a second.

This will be the most expensive campground in the area, plus they charge a
"resort fee". WiFi is almost non existant, park had standing water for long periods after it rained.
