One of the most important things is to try making the crossings in the tri state area during off peak hours.

I pull my trailer off and back on the island a few times a year as I have property up in the Adirondacks we camp at. Best route given is the Tappan Zee bridge to 287 to 95 south to the Throgs Neck bridge. These 2 bridges are best when towing. The George Washington bridge is a white knuckle experience. Stay away from that one. Also stay away from the Whitestone. It's narrower and only a few of the toll lanes are wide enough for trailers. I learned that the hard way. Had to have the police stop traffic behind me so I could back up and go through one of the wider toll booths. That was a joy let me tell ya. Lol

Once you get over the Throgs neck stay in the middle lane to go onto the Clearview expressway and finally onto the LIE and you're home free.

Trust me it really isn't that bad.
