Custer State Park

Hi everyone,
We are planning a trip to Mt Rushmore in early September. I have been looking on the website there seems to be a few campgrounds within Custer. We plan on setting up and not moving for several days while we take day trips around the area. Would appreciate advice on which campground is best/ most scenic etc.
Traveling in a 29me with a toad if this makes a difference.

Thanks

A number of years ago we spent a night in Custer State Park. As I remember it, nice campground, clean and at the time, not really crowded.

There is a large bison herd in the park and while driving one of the dirt roads, we came around a curve and over a rise to find ourselves in the middle of the herd. Spent about 30 minutes sitting there with bison walking past us. Great photo opportunity. Unfortunately another car came around the corner blasting his horn, upsetting the herd and we decided it was time to leave when a bull started pawing the ground. Still a very memorable stop and pleasant campground.

I totally agree with iFallsguy. Custer State Park is you best bet; we stayed there several years ago and loved it. Its a huge park with several campgrounds scattered throughout. Located right next to the town of Custer, a good place to stock up and eat out. Checkout the Purple Pie Place for homemade pie and ice cream... yum.

We stayed in Blue Bell Campground and found it very nice. Regardless of which campground suggest being sure you have a good map of the park with you before you arrive. We entered the park via the Blue Bell entrance on 87 and the contact station did not have any park maps. When asked for directions to the campground the volunteer, while very nice, sent us on a wild goose chase lasting over an hour for what should have been only a short 5 minute drive. Aside from a lack of meaningful signage the park is absolutely beautiful and we definitely want to make a return visit.
