Disney Fort Wilderness Internet discussion

Ah.... I am here... Fort Wilderness, Disney World and boy is it HOT and HUMID. so this first day we're staying IN the camper with the A/C's going.

Before leaving NY, I did my usual investigation on Internet service. Turns out that Fort Wilderness does NOT have Wi-Fi service. Bummer huh? Well, not so fast... They have (in my opinion) better, Cable Internet Service and here's what I did.

Fort Wilderness will let you "borrow" a cable modem, with a security deposit of course. To hook it up you can use that A/B jumper for Satellite, but instead of hooking the A port to the Satellite receiver, you hook it to a quality cable splitter, and one side of the splitter to the cable modem and the other to the 'B' port.

Turn on the cable modem, hook the ethernet cable to a wireless router, then power the wireless router. Viola - Internet, but here's the best part...

You can bring your own cable modem. That's right, bring your own, plug it in and it WORKS! I have a good Netgear cable modem from home, I hooked it up, plugged in my Netgear wireless router and am typing this note.

Running a speed test it's about 4mp/s BUT it's consistent! Best internet by any RV Park I've been to.

Now you know why we stay up North from April until October

Yes and No, some modems work others don't. Several people have reported success and others said it wouldn't connect.

Now the wireless router has never been an issue.

What loop are you in? Have fun, just don't melt away...

Will they allow your own satellite TV antenna on a tripod?

Most definitely, the problem is finding a "hole" in the trees on many of the sites, but there are many tripods in use.

We just got back from the Ft. It was our first time there. We are AP holders with DVC and spend about 30 days on property. We were extremely disappointed with the lack of Wifi. The value resorts have better wifi! I wish I had know ahead of time about the modem / router advise. There were no modems available during our stay and planning would hav been easier.

We're still here and while we're not spending a lot of time at the camper, the Cable Internet has been pretty solid. The speed varies, but for the most part has been very reliable and I have been quite pleased with the service, far better than most campground wi-fi.

I will be at Ft. Wilderness for the week of Christmas this year and I will just use my normal Verizon hotspot data from my smartphone. I full time and have a large data plan anyway, so I will just use what I use all the time.
