Escort To Site - What do you think?

Ok, since we arrived in Florida, almost all of the RV parks we've visited provide an escort to the site and they try to give you directions to back in...

What do you think of this "service"?

I can understand them being concerned about guests running over or backing into services and causing damage, but overall I don't like this at all.

Having some person unknown to me try to give me directions is something I find very insulting. I've never had a problem backing up. I don't get confused, frustrated, and all mixed up like some people do. But when someone is barking out orders that don't make sense, that is just very distracting and puts me in a very bad mood almost immediately.

1. The people giving directions never seem to know at all what they are doing.
2. In every case for us, we've had some idiot saying "left! right! right! left! STOP! Left!" about that quick.
3. In every case, we've had some idiot who kept crossing back and forth behind the trailer as I was backing up. I stop immediately and they don't understand why.
4. sometimes, you get someone that points or flails their arms all about instead of giving directions clearly... one time they will barely poke their index finger like they are pushing an invisible button, and the next time they will look like their arm is about to fly off of their body.
5. They don't stay in your view. When a person is backing up, they should be looking in their mirrors and the unneeded "guide" should stay where they remain in your view. And that's what I told the last two. I said I don't need this, I can back up a trailer just fine... and you need to remain where you see me in my driver's side mirror and told him the same thing that's on the back of semi-trailers: "if you can't see me, I can't see you". They should know this already. No, they should stay in the office and out of the way.
6. They gave me a map and all sites are numbered. I can count and read, I don't need a guide.

I like being escorted, as they generally know the best way around the CG to get into the designated site. As far as attempts to help me back - when they are actually being helpful, I appreciate it. If they aren't, I suddenly become deaf (blaming it on my hearing aid battery going dead), and thank them afterwards for the attempt at being helpful. Best places are the ones that ask first if I want any guidance in backing in.

I agree with Flapper - I like being shown where my site is as I have seen way too many unmarked interior roads at campgrounds. I usually decline the assistance backing in as my DW is pretty good at knowing what I want to do and where I want to land on a site.

I have small orange cones from Walmart. When they escort me to my site I arrange the cones where I want the side of the trailer for the Utilities to be and the back where I want to stop. They usually get the hint and leave me alone.

I think it is a nice service that eliminates potential problems in unfamiliar territory.

In respect to actually backing in.. if alone I would show them where I want them to stand and where I want to be. If it's not working for me, I'd just ignore it and tell them not to get in the way.

Nothing to get too excited about, it's not an insult to my ego if they want to help. I've been married for a long time so I have learned how to ignore unnecessary instructions.

Most campgrounds I have been to escort you to the site. Even when they ask if it's my first time at the campground at the front and I say no, they still escort me and I don't mind it at all. I actually like being escorted. I've never had one try to back me in though. And I'm sure there is no rule that you must follow their directions. Maybe just politely say "I'm good thanks..."

TLM, I have never had that experience but I think that would annoy me as well. My wife and I have backed our trailer(s) in together for many years and we trust each other's direction. I guess the service would be appreciated but I would decline the help if possible. Not personal but I know my abilities and don't want to rely on someone I don't know or how they think for help.

Do they do that in Vegas? I'm up in No. Nevada where life's a bit more relaxed

I have been to one remote campground I'd never been to that was first come first serve. The Host drove me around the campground in a golf cart pointing out the pros and cons of each site and which sites he recommended. That was pretty cool and once I decided, he brought me back to my truck and left me alone.

What he said ^^, I would say, too, that my DW and I have backed many trailers into many sites successfully (knock on wood ).

There was one campground we went to that escorted us to the site. Asked if we needed help backing in. We politely declined, and the escort said to let them know if we needed anything, and went on his way.

We've been escorted a few times to our site, but I can only remember once where they tried to back us in. We were in our Greyhawk, which had a rearview camera and good mirrors. Unless it was a tight spot, I really didn't need help backing into sites. I just ignored the guy. He eventually realized that I was ignoring him and drove back to the office in his golf cart.

The escort to the site is nice. We've been to some campgrounds where the maps were not accurate or the sites were not labeled well and we had to circle around a time or two. Although it has never happened to us fortunately, I have seen folks get all setup and then realize or be told they are in the wrong site.

Never had that level of help. But if I was offered a "Follow Me" in order to find my campsite, I'd take it in a heartbeat.

The only help I need when backing the TT is someone who stays visible in my left-hand outside mirror and points in the direction the back end of the TT has to go. Once my helper gets that through his or her head, we do great!

Do any of you ever tip the person who escorts you to your site?

I'm in the "take me there, but then go away" group. DW doesn't even get out of the truck until I'm parked. I'd rather do it myself(since early 70's), saves lot's of arguements.

We have only been to a couple campgrounds that escort you to the site. If at a new place, I don't mind letting us know how to get there, but decline when asked if any help is needed backing into the site. One of the campgrounds is a smaller KOA that we know pretty well, so an escort is really not needed, but they still like to "help".

Never tipped the escort.

We have been escorted but never given backup assistance. I find the escort helpful as sometimes the numbering is not evident or the map correspond to what I think my eyes are seeing..
Especially at dusk or when the sun is in your face

No never. I do like an escort if it does not delay me getting to the site. Like having to wait for them to finish a coffee.

I think it s a nice service in a large cg to prevent people from getting lost.
