Favorite NY State Park

I thought I'd ask if anyone has camped any of the New York State Parks and if so which one or ones are your favorites?

Hither Hills on the eastern tip of Long Island is great but it literally sells out the second it opens up so it's VERY difficult to get something in peak season.

Lots of nice parks in the Adirondacks. Depends on what part of the Adirondacks you want to be in. Wilmington Notch is small and not much there, but close to the high peaks. Have camped there a couple of times. One of our favorites is Lake Durant, but it is far from the major roads. Stay in Paradox lake a couple of times a year due to it convenient location.

Have also camped in some of the Parks in the Catskills, but they tend to get crowded during the camping season. North South lake is nice at the very beginning and very end of the season. Usually go there a couple times a year, off season, on weekdays.

We camped at a county park in NY state. Croton on the Hudson, it was a nice park. The facilities were adequate, but the campground is a peninsula that is surrounded on both sides by the Hudson River. It was spectacular. Great views of the river and great places to walk the dogs. We actually saw a coyote at dusk. There are signs everywhere about nesting owls, although we weren't there at the right time to see them.

Lakeside and Hamlin Beach State Parks are pretty nice. Lakeside doesn't have a swimming beach, while Hamlin does. They are both on Lake Ontario between Buffalo and Rochester off the Parkway.

The ones that I've camped at are North South Lake,Keneth Wilson,Northampton Beach,Moreau Lake,Luzerne,Eighth Lake,Limkiln and the Battlegrounds in Lake George.
This year I'm looking at trying Mongaup Pond in the Catskills. Anyone been there? If so what are your thoughts?

Upstate Campers

Hey CP-
We are in Toga and love Moreau (Yup- 10 minutes from home) and Rogers Rock (about 1 hour from Toga). Both are great getaways. Next summer we plan to branch out a bit and try Thompson State Park and Treman State Park. What did you think of North Hampton? I heard the sites are cool but it is VERY buggy.

Hither Hills great location just on the other side of the dunes from the beach. Shower facilities were excellent. No power at the sites. Sites are kind of close, no shade due to being on the beach. Books up as soon as online reservations are available.

Sampson state park, finger lakes region. 5 loops in the woods with about 35 sites Each. Lots of shade. Some spots have a lot of room, most have plenty of room. Electric at each site in the woods. There are sites not in the woods, I don't recommend them. Shower facilities are ok, only 2 showers per loop per gender. Easy walk to the lake. Nice playground at the lake. About 100 wineries with beautiful views and wine tasting around the lakes.

Battleground lake George. Great location can walk to town and lake. Facilities were ok. Sites are kind of small, better for small RV. Maybe 40 sites total

We lived in upstate NY for 10 years and really enjoyed camping in Selkirk Shores, right on the shore of Lake Ontario and Green Lake State Park, just outside of Syracuse. Both offered great family campsites; swimming, hiking trails and great scenery.

1) Letchworth SP in the Finger Lakes area (called the Grand Canyon of the East)
2). Wellesley Island SP in the Thousand Islands

Both are run by NYS Parks, Recreation & Historic Places.

A close third would be a relatively new NYS DEC Campground, Schroon Manor, on Schroon Lake.
