Heading to Fort wilderness FL.

Heading to Florida from philadelphia area, has anyone gone by way of RT 81 to 77 instead of I95? We have gone 2 times in the past 11 years and both times sat in major traffic. the 1st time we left at 8:00 am and hit it in VA. the next time we thought we would miss it if we left at 4:00am. well that time hit it NC. this time thinking of going out though Harrisburg and down. It will add about 100 miles to trip. has anyone done it? Thanks John

I went via route 13 through De, MD and VA. You run into lights through some of the towns you pass through but no real traffic.

100 miles will add 2 hours plus the fuel. If you decide to use 77 you have a long downhill grade once you hit Fancy Gap which is South of the 81-77 merge in Wytheville it's not real bad you just need to pay attention and down shift as needed. If I remember correctly it's about 8-10 miles long.

Oh and enjoy yourself, we'll be there in October.

When you hit the rush hour commute.. find a place to pull over and have a meal.. it is one of the beauties of RVing..

I live in central Pa and have done the 81/77/26/95 thing more times than I can count. Traffic around Charlotte can **** real bad if you catch it plus as another said the hills will get you.

I would just **** it up and do 95.... are you going to take 1 or 2 days to get there?

Marty

Thanks everyone, well trailers packed, trucks packed and 1 more day of work. I'd say it will be time to relax but last time we went, we needed a vacation from our vacation. kids kept us running and busy. but well worth it. kids still talk about it.

We do the 81/77 route all the time and prefer it to I-95 through NJ, Baltimore and Washington by a lot. As diversions, we sometimes cut over to 29 Around Elkton and pick up 52 between Greensboro and Charlotte. South of Columbia, we usually take 321 and pick up 95 just north of Savannah.

You are not picking the best time of year for Ft. Wilderness as it is going to be very hot and crowded at Disney in the Summer.

We've done 81, 66, 17 and then 95. You come on 95 at Fredericksburg Va. We enjoy this trip... Just came back from 3 weeks at the Fort.
