McKinney Falls SP, Austin, TX
We were meeting some friends in Austin for our annual Holiday get together, and so instead of making the long drive home after, we decided to make an impromptu RV trip out of it, and boy am I glad we did!
The park is located just South of Austin Bergstrom Int'l Airport, just north of the intersection of East William Cannon and McKinney Falls Parkway (just North of the end of East William Cannon). Not a great part of town, but for now, the park is outside the "blast radius" and is it's own little island of solitude in the madness. DW and I had visited the park when we lived in Pflugerville many years ago, so we knew it was a fairly nice place.
RV sites come with either 30A or 50A service, and a few are even pull-thru (no sewer except at the "Park Host" pads). We were lucky and landed a 50A pull-thru with no reservation. We showed up Friday afternoon with no reservation, knowing there was space, just not what we would get, and we got lucky and landed what we would have reserved if we had been able to (50A pull-thru).
Overall, the park is very well laid out and clean. The park really feels much larger than it actually is. The RV spots are spaced nicely, and for most of them, you get a real feeling of isolation. You're not right on top of your neighbors, and there's plenty of foliage between the sites. Each site has a tent pad, a picnic table and a fire pit. The way our spot was configured, the picnic table and fire ring were not very convenient, so we set up on the tent pad. Our chairs and our "Little Red Campfire" sat there just perfectly.
The only caution/criticism is the levelness of the spots. Many are really out of level, so some work is required to level your rig. We managed okay, but i saw some "interesting" solutions employed by some lesser prepared RVers, including the use of fire wood!
I didn't get a chance to enter or use any of the restroom facilities, but they looked clean and well kept from the outside. The office has a really neat store attached that has quite an impressive variety of souvenirs, and even some groceries (watch out for the markup, med can of Wolf Brand was tagged $2.59, Peanut butter was over $5...).
The park was actually pretty full, but for the most part, it didn't feel that way. There were a lot of people out hiking around at the falls, but other than that, it was pretty quiet. When we left, we didn't encounter even one other person at the dump station, which was nice, it allowed me to get a rinse on my black tank I wasn't expecting to get there.
Granted, this is probably their "slow" season. I imagine that during the summer, the place is a zoo since it's so close to Austin. But we had a GREAT time and look forward to returning!
