Michigan friends, I need help!!

I'm trying to set up directions for our UP trip in August. One of the CG'S were staying at is Muskallonge Lake SP and we want to visit Pictured Rocks. The map/mapquest is showing the trip to be around 1:45 mins one way via car. Does that sound right? Are there inaccessible/unpaved roads, that sort of thing? If it really is this long of a drive, I'm going to have to make some changes to our itinerary. If so, then does anyone have any CG recommendations for Pictured Rock? My SP/Nat'l Park guide does not show any with camper sites. Thanks so much!! Kim

If you want to camp near Picture Rocks/ Munising, there is a city tourist campground just west of Munising. IIRC, it used to be a KOA or something, but the city ended up buying it. There are a few campgrounds around, but I do not think they have RV plug-ins. If you are looking for a state park with RV plug ins that is closer to Picture Rocks, then give Indian Lake state park a look. It is on the south shore of da U.P., but I'm about 90% shure it is a closer drive than Muskallunge lake.

If you go to Indian Lake, a must see is . It is a natural spring that forms a pond with some of the clearest water you'll ever see. You can go out on the observation raft and see about 40' to the bottom. Another place is Fayette State park, an old historical site from the 1800's. It has a campground, but the last time we were there, all the outlets were only 20 amp. Kitch-itikipi is very close to Indian Lake and both Fayette State Park and Picture Rocks are within an easy afternoon's striking distance of Indian lake.

Driving along the coast on Hwy 58 only should take you just under an hour to get to Munising if your going there to take the boat tour. The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore actually starts only around 10-15 miles from Muskallonge State Park.

I know Pictured Rocks covers a huge area and I know we will spend a couple of days exploring, at least. I don't want to make a long drive each way to where we're worn and burned out. Just wondering if I should cancel Muskallonge's 4 nights and book the 4 nights near Pictured Rocks.

I agree that the tourist park just west of Munising is really nice, right on Lake Superior. Close to the Pictured Rocks Boat Tours, which I also recommend. There is even free RV parking Last I knew at the casino in Christmas, just a few miles from Munising... not nearly as pretty as the tourist park.

58 is a real slow drive and in most spots not that scenic. We did the Rocks from Munising Tourist Park last year and it was better than coming from the east.

On edit: You also need to remember that you will not have cell phone reception in all areas. On the 45 minute walk to Mosquito falls we lost verizon for 30 minutes of the walk.

We've made our final changes. At least they better be final! Lol! We are staying 5 nights at the Munising Tourist Park and 4 nights at Brimley SP so we can access many sites there. We knew we wanted to spend alot of time at Pictured Rocks so this should work out. My hubby is happy since I shaved hours off our trip. I just wish we had more time. We're hoping to leave home a day early and stop possibly in Cheyboygen for an overnight.

Make sure you take the Pictured Rocks boat tour or the Glass bottom ShipWreck tour, or even both.

I seemed to recall a couple of years ago, hearing of a guest on the glass bottom shipwreck boat tour who spotted a previously unknown ship wreck on the lake bottom.

On your way through Cheboygan you can stay at one of the parks in Mackinac or at Aloha State Park in Aloha about 15 miles south of Cheboygan. Great park on Mullet Lake with grass sites.

We will definitely be doing the boat tours as well as hiking as much as possible. Hoping each day at Pictured Rocks consists of hiking. Is there something we should try to do on Grand Island?
