Myakka River State Park

Just got back from Myakka River State Park near Sarasota Florida. This is the largest state park in Florida covering about 42 square miles. In all they have around 99 campsites with about 50 in a new section that has full hook-ups and a variety of back in & pull through sites. The two older sections have water & electric only.

You cannot fail to see wild life, it is everywhere. We saw Osprey, hawks, owls, rosette spoonbills, sand hill cranes, snowy egrets, great blue herons, tri-colored herons, anhingas and a variety of ducks. There were wild turkey's, feral hogs, gopher tortoise, sliders, armadillo, deer, and more alligators than I've ever seen in my life. You cannot look in any of the ponds, lake or streams without seeing several.

It was the end of the dry season and the water table was so low that the lake depth was only 3 feet. The river was mostly dried out with water only in the deeper spots so we did not use our canoe. But there were still plenty plenty of trails to hike and bike.

Lake Myakka tours are available on "the worlds largest airboat" and there is a tram tour through the scrub, prairies, and hammock. Both were good and very informative.

We had a great time there.

Myakka River is one our favorites. We are spending Thanksgiving there again this year.
