National Park Senior Pass - Big Price Increase Coming

FYI, as of today, Dec. 13, both the US House and Senate have passed HR 4680, which - among other things - raises the cost of the lifetime National Park Senior Pass to at least $80. It's currently $10. I would expect the president to sign it.

So if you're planning on getting the Senior Pass, do it fast or be prepared to shell out $80 (or more).

You should be able to get one at a National Park for $10. I think it's $20 if you do it online; someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on that.

I'm getting mine online ASAP.

Roger

I don't know about the present plans but I bought one for $10 bucks many years ago and it has paid for itself many times over.

I didn't think you could apply for a pass online. Thought it had to be in person. Maybe I'm confusing it with another senior discount. What is the online address to apply? Thanks

Yeah, have not needed one yet. BUT... we are planning to visit Acadia National Park in June 2017, so I'm getting mine online as quickly as possible.

OK, just ordered my Senior Pass online. Relatively simple process, but you WILL need to upload a scanned image of a document verifying your eligibility, like a driver's license, passport, etc. Have it ready when you begin the process. And it is $20 online.

Do DW & I both need a pass, or does one pass cover both of us?

One pass will cover both as long as you enter together. Pass in her name and you take a trip to a park without her you won't get in

Should have asked before, what is the senior age to get the pass?

As I recall, age 62.
And don't ever lose it, or wear it out, because as I recall it's not transferable.

At $10 it took me exactly two nights to pay for itself.

The one I have is called the Golden Age Pass, since discontinued. If you are traveling/camping and visiting federal facilities, the new version will save you countless fees for parking, entrance and camping discounts .

Yeah, especially if you live out here in God's Country. There are so many national parks and monuments to visit out here that it's almost a necessity. It doesn't take long to get your money's worth out of it. But $10 always beats $80.

Mine is the Golden Age Pass too, purchased the spring after I turned 62. Just made it to 70 two days ago, and I've gotten a lot of use out of it in the last 8 years.

Most of the time I don't really have a problem with paying a entrance fee just to help support the park (I spent many weekends hiking in Rocky Mountain NP back in the 80's before I met my wife to be, and paid the $10 regular entry fee each time (it changed at some time during that period, but that's the number I have in my head), but I will often just drive through for the heck of it on my way to some other destination. Rocky Mountain NP is on a direct line from here to my sister's home - there are faster routes, but none more scenic. I have also driven from Cody WY over the Beartooth highway and through Yellowstone and Grand Teton without spending any real time in either on my way to my brother's home in SE Idaho.

The National Parks are truly a national treasure, and easily worth the fees that they charge, whether you qualify for the senior pass or not.
