We like to go in late fall early winter because of the fishing. However that is also when you get days on days of N/E wind so we try not to stay ocean side. In the summer ocean side is fine most of the time other than it's hot. Ocean side with a strong N/E wind and you will get covered in salt spray unless you ask to be behind the few dunes that are left out there. They build back up after storms and it takes time. The higher the dunes the better the camping behind them. It's a beautiful place.

That's because the Ocracoke - Cedar Island and Ocracoke - Swan Quarter ferries are toll ferries. These ferries cross Pamlico Sound to the mainland and crossing time takes approximately 2:15 (Cedar Island) or 2:30 (Swan Quarter). Both of these ferries depart from Silver Lake in the Village of Ocracoke.

The Ocracoke - Hatteras ferry (which departs from the northern point of Ocracoke Island) crosses Hatteras Inlet and is a free ferry. Its crossing time is approximately 55 minutes.

We are heading to NC Outer Banks this summer to visit our son. Driving from Phoenix to Norfolk and will be camping on the sound side of OB for a few days to do some some windsurfing before driving into Norfolk. Our son speaks highly of region and we sure are looking forward to the trip.

A benefit to Camp Hatteras that we thoroughly enjoyed was going over to the sound side of the campground to view the sunsets. If you decide to visit the OBX and time permits, I highly recommend a visit to Ocracoke. It's a short ferry ride and the village there is very nice. Howard's Pub at Ocracoke is highly recommended as well.

Best of luck to you!

Frisco Woods Campground on Hatteras Island is a favorite spot for us. We have been there several times through the years. We grew up not far from the OBX, so we go there often (not always camping).
