Planning a trip to the Royal Gorge

Does anyone have any suggestions on nice campgrounds to stay at reasonably close to the Royal Gorge? I know it is high desert so would appreciate any recommendations for near royal gorge as well as in nearby mountains. We are also heading to NM & would like recommendations on campgrounds in the mountain of NM - would love some greenery!

It's been twenty years since we camped with the kids near Royal Gorge, so I can't help ya on the cg, but can tell you that we stayed where it was an easy drive to do a whitewater rafting trip, the Royal Gorge Railroad, and a visit to the Royal Gorge.

There is a KOA in canon city, co. It looked fine. It was somewhat desert camping but close to where you want to be.We stayed at Mueller State Park, it is about an hour away but in the mountains, on the backside of Pikes Peak. It was a really nice park. It had electric with water close by. Very peaceful place.
