South Padre, Tx

We are wanting to spend a few days around South Padre Island. Not finding any very exciting options for campgrounds. Wondering if anyone has any input. Thanks.

Which on? The one in the Rio Grande Valley is the real Padre Island., Deep S. Tx. Is very nice. there are three, county, city. Private. The one in Corpus is flakey.

The Port Isabel area is typically know as "South" Padre Island but the island itself stretched 113 miles. Port Isabel has become a big commercial tourist trap and is much cleaner thanks to the revenue created in that area. Corpus is a fisherman's spot with some tourist appeal but much of Padre Island south of Bob Hall Pier hasn't been (and probably will never be) developed for residential or commercial use. There are some nicer CGs in Port Aransas of you prefer not to make the trip to Port Isabel. From someone who grew up in Corpus I'll keep my opinions to myself.

I will add a +1 to Iraqvet05's comment on Port Aransas. Port Aransas is a much nicer place to go RVing IMHO. South Padre Island has just gotten too big; Port Aransas is much more "quaint" if you will. The beaches are fantastic, there's plenty of space to spread out, parking and driving on the beach is much easier, plenty of places to stay in your RV with nice facilities, full hookups, etc. And plenty of nice restaurants on the island itself. And there's easy access to Corpus Christi if that's your thing. It's just a much more relaxed and less pretentious place, which is what I'm looking for when I'm on an RV vacation.

If you like fishing instead of "beach bumming", then Rockport is probably your place. We haven't been there yet because DW is much more into the sand and surf and not so much with the fishing. But the state park there is pretty nice from what I can tell.

Thanks for the input y'all. We are wanting to go to Isabel. Deep South Padre. About all we find is a KOA and a county park. Both have mixed reviews. We have a six year old and Schlitterbaun water park sounds entertaining for him. We have never been to this area and are looking for a relaxing beach area. Probably not any fishing. We traveled a few years ago to Pensacola stopping at New Orleans on the way and had a great time. Trying to see new stuff each direction. From the sounds of it, we are not expecting near the trip like we had going to Pensacola, but will advise afterwards. Leaning towards the county rv park due to being closer to the beach. Thanks again....

Hurricane season? It's a bit early for that. Officially starts June 1, but not likely to see any storms until September.

This time of year you have to watch out for when the Jet stream dips and hits the hot moist air coming in off the Gulf. This coupled with the moisture and wind coming in from the West out of the Mountains in N. Mexico can bring up some pretty impressive thunderstorms that often include high wind and hail.

We have looked at several places in the area but have not taken the camper to any of them. My impressions of three that would be sufficient. Long Island Village (Long Island Village - LongIslandVillage.com) might be my first choice. Appeared to be clean, nice facilities. The county campground was ok and walking distance to the beach. The KOA was neat and clean and quite compact. The sites were somewhat small and close together. You probably need reservations at any of these places. Joe's Oyster Bar in Port Isabel is very good and prices seem better than most. It is not a fancy place but one of our favorites (oysters are not the only thing on the menu...they have fish and shrimp too). The dolphin watch boat rides can be fun for kids. Some of them will drag the bottom with a net and let the kids see and touch some of the marine life. We really liked the boat tour to Brownsville. You get to see ships being salvaged and oil rigs being repaired. Dolphins sometimes play with the boat during the trip. I'm not sure it is a good trip for kids as it takes a few hours.

I have yet to RV there, but have researched it. Isla Blanca Park is a good looking option.

Isla Blanca Park

This is a county park on the very tip of the island, its pretty big. Has own beach access and some decent amenities. The website is nearly non-existant however.

PDF map of park

If you go let us know your impressions. My DW is all about sitting on beach enjoying sand and book, kids and I like surf and kites...this looked good to me but being so close to Mexico I do worry about a bit about theft/security at the park, even though our unit is super basic and doesn't even have a TV.

We are here now. At the county park. It's definitely nothing to brag about. There are lots of spots, and lots of them are taken by full timers and such. From an RVers standpoint, campground sucks. But, it has close beach access and in a good location. If you do go, right by the KOA is the registration center. You must stop there first. Didn't know that. Got to the entrance and had to turn around and go back. Luckily the guy at the entrance asked how tall my rig is. We walked away and looked. I wouldn't have made it through the overhang which is dented to crap from people banging their ac units on it. Really!!!!!???? After backing out into traffic, getting registered, returning through the unlabeled oversized entrance, finding my spot unescorted, realizing after fully set up that I'm in the wrong spot(I tried calling to no avail and decided to stay put), a few beers later and a nice beach I didn't care. Expect no help from the office. They are very nice, but don't know anything about RV stuff. You just do what you want. Buggies allowed Yada Yada.....:
