Summer '17 - Houston / San Antonio / Dallas Campgrounds

Planning a 2 week trip this coming summer to Texas, known current locations we would spend a few days in are Houston, San Antonio, Austin and Dallas.

May make it as far as Big Bend National Park then work our way back through Dallas. Will also be stopping in East Texas (Winnsboro / Pickton / Mt Pleasant / Pittsburg) on the way back to Florida.

Because of work schedule and having enough time for the trip we will not be able to leave until June 30th, guessing we would be in Houston or San Antonio on July 4th.

Which area would be better to be at for the 4th?

We are "State / National Park" campers, not big on the packed in Private CG's but know on this trip we will have to be flexible.

I have begun searching CG's for the Houston and San Antonio areas, so far does not seem to be any State Parks with Camping that are close.

Can anyone provide input on Campgrounds, either State or Private, local to the areas we will be going through?

Any help or advice would be appreciated... Thank You

Pilot Knoll Park in Flower Mound

Flower Mound is a suburb of Dallas and there is a local park called Pilot Knoll that we like real well. It is on Lake lewisville. It has about 40 RV spaces with electric & water but no sewer. If you decide to use the park ping me for any questions. It is my home park and we live about 5 miles away. We are heading to Big bend in early April. Stopping in San Angel on the way there and Fort Davis & Abilene on the way back.

Thanks for the info… I'll add Pilot Knoll to our prospect list, that is our kind of park.

Where do you stay when you go to Big Bend?

Brazos Bend State Park near Houston is nice and I think they have elec, water hookups and lots of deer and gators. A couple of years back we spent the 4th at the Brackenridge park (used to be a state park) and enjoyed it.
The KOA in San Antonio is also nice but I know that's not what you are looking for. The La Fogatta restaurant is on our must visit list.
We've found Dallas a bit odd for CG's, there don't seem to be any that we think are convenient (close) to the city.

Inks lake state park is about 70 miles northwest of Austin, it's a nice park, I do believe they have electricity but not full hookups, still more like camping than commercial campgrounds.

As for San Antonio, I have to agree the KOA is a decent place, I stayed there for 2 weeks in 2014, it setting is in a wooded area and is not bad. I'm not a big fan of commercial campgrounds either, but this one is decent.

Travelers World RV resort in San Antonio. Not a state park but your not that packed in. You can catch a city bus right across the street for a 15 minute ride downtown or a bike path entrance is right at the campground. I think they said it is a 5 or 7 mile bike ride downtown and about 1 mile from 1 of the Missions.

Sorry I can't contribute much. I am in Abilene and would love to visit with a fellow forum member in the future!

We are headed to Cedar Breaks in Georgetown (never been, near Austin) March 18th. I can report back.

I also am wanting to plan a trip to Tyler State Park in June. That's East Texas.

Texas State Parks have a good app. There is not much directly in San Antonio. What you will want is Texas Hill Country. Check out Guadalupe River State Park.

What do you want to do in San Antonio? That can help me guide you.

The views expressed may not be mine in five minutes.

You need to get on the Texas parks and wildlife website to book your reservations asap. The parks fill up fast during holidays and weekends and you may have difficulty getting a spot.

Thanks to all for the info. I have been on the Texas State Park website, that's when I noticed there were not a lot of campgrounds near the major areas we were planning to go to. I will get on it again and book up what I think will work and check out some of the other parks that you all have recommended.

I've already figured out we will have to Private Park it some on this trip. Would be our first time in 5 years of Camping.

I'll give my input on the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Dinosaur Valley State Park to the southwest of town isquite nice. Joe Pool Lake closer to Dallas has a nice campground. Not far from there on the opposite side of the lake is Cedar Hill State Park which is supposed to be nice. A little ways beyond Dallas to the east is Lake Tawakoni State park. Is ok, but further east is Tyler State Park which is nicer. As for Houston, I've also heard good things of Brazos Bend.

On parks around Houston, you have Huntsville state park 1 hour north, Livingston state park 1 1/2 hours ne, Galveston state park 1 hour south, Brazos bend 45 minutes south, stephen f austin 45 minutes west. So you basically have all areas around Houston to choose from. Just depends on what you want to do as far as day excursions. Hopefully this helps.

In the Winnsboro/Pittsburg area there is Bob Sandlin State Park on Lake Bob Sandlin & Walleye Park ( Franklin County Water Corp) on Cypress Springs. Both nice places.
DFW area we stay at Lake Benbrooks CoE Holiday Park. Cedar Hill State Park near Grand Prarie & City of Grand Prarie has a nice park on Joe Pool Lake

If you find a Texas state park that you're interested... Book early. They tend to fill up quick. You can reserve a type of site but not THE site so the earlier you arrive the better chance you have of getting something decent.

Inks and Tyler both book up sooner than others. Inks is probably already booked solid for the summer.

There are a lot of campgrounds between San Antonio and Austin. If you're planning on being in both cities you might consider just picking something in the middle. It's an easy drive to either.

I stayed here last Sept & found it to be really nice. Very close to downtown (Alamo, river walk, etc.) & CG was very friendly & safe. The river walk (it is several miles long) is right behind the C.G. & is about 4-5 miles to downtown or the other direction leads to the Missions in this area.

Thanks for all for the info! Looks like this trip is getting postponed for a couple years for various reasons but I do appreciate all the input.
