Trip to Badlands National Park

We're considering a trip to Badlands Natl Park from our home in Northwest Indiana in early September. For those that have be there, is there anything in particular that we should consider/know about? Would also appreciate any recommendations on things to see do in the area of the park.

Badlands is very cool place to visit. Unbelievable scenery. However, it's not a very big park though. Even with day hikes I can't see how you'd need more than a day to see most of it. We went through in a half a day and that includes doing some short trails and stopping quite a number of times.

We stayed at Sleepy Hollow in Wall. Not a destination but good for over nighters. Squeaky clean showers and a small pool.

Its only an hour or so from the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore so that's something you can add to your itinerary. I don't think its too far from Devil's Tower either. You might consider staying somewhere in the Black Hills and going to Badlands from there.

a day is good enough for us at badlands. we stayed at custer state park and did a day trip to badlands. we came through the western part of the park on a dirt road and had a buffalo herd in that part of the park. don't know if many people get over to that part of the park but it was nice. if you eat in the restaurant in the park the indian tacos were good!!

Actually there a lot of areas that are referred to as Badlands. Only one is a national park. He said national park in his OP so I went with that.

We'll be going there this summer. We are booked at the KOA near Mt. Rushmore due to its central location to Devils Tower, Badlands NP, Crazy Horse, etc. Some other things we'll check out are the Jewel Caves and the Battle of Little Bighorn (Custer Battlefield) site.

If that is the KOA in Custer, we stayed there back in '05. Not a bad place, and the location is pretty good as well for all the attractions you mentioned. Be sure to take the lantern tour at Jewel Cave if they still offer it. As the name says, everyone carries their own lantern as the sole source of light, and you enter through the caves natural opening. Headed back up there ourselves again this July. Will be staying at Custer Gulch CG this time. We will include a day trip to the Badlands this time. Only 6 hours from home, and yet we have never been there. From the pictures I've seen, it is worth the trip just for the Badlands. All the rest is a bonus.
