trip to FL in February

Hi, we already want to get out of MN as we have almost a foot of snow already. We are planning a trip to FL in March. Would like to get some campground recommendations. We want to go to St. Augustine area, Homosassa Springs area & Davenport (south of Orlando) to see some friends. We don't need a fancy campground -- do a lot of state parks so don't need full hookups. Thanks for any recommendations.

Go to the Florida State Parks website. All their state parks are listed by area with photos of their campgrounds. Most have no sewer but plenty of bath houses and dump stations. In the Davenport area, not too far away is Lake Kissimmee State Park. I can't say enough about that one. It is on beautiful Lake Kissimmee although you do not have lake side campsites. The camp sites are all wooded pines with plenty of shade. The wildlife is incredible. Take a small bag of corn and throw it out in the woods behind your campsite. Deer and turkey are abundant and will walk right up to you. There is an old and I do mean old fishing camp close by called Camp Mack. There is a campground there with full hookups. You have to go on an airboat ride there and spend a little extra money and take a personal airboat tour with Capt. Fred if he is still there. The big group airboat are ok, but the personalized tour is ten times better. They have a lot of bass tournaments there also and if you hit the weekend of a tournament, make sure you show up for the weigh in. There are some monster bass caught and released there. You will have a great time.

Anastasia SP is a few minutes south of the fort in St. Augustine, and one of our favorite places. You would not be disappointed. March can be difficult to forecast for reservations in Florida. IMO you should make your reservations ASAP. And if there are no openings, check again right before you leave. Also, check the private CG's. They're all about the same within a price range. The difference is how well they are managed.

You can save money by getting away from the water. On the west side you can get monthly rates around $450 if you go inland. The same caliber CG on the gulf will go for $1200 for the same month in peak season. (There are also weekly and daily rates.) Supply and demand is the game; if there are open sites at one place you can assume most of them are not full and you would be wise to negotiate your rate.
