As far as a good time to travel to the Keys, My wife and I have been travelling from Canada to Ft. Lauderdale at the beginning of May. Never found bugs to be an issue, heat was mid 80's. When we travelled to the keys from Ft. Lauderdale, we did notice two campgrounds on the way to Key west. I think one was on Islamorda and I think they were KOA's but don't hold me to that. I also read a writeup about camping in the keys in Trailer Life Magazine which focused on the two campgrounds I mentioned, they looked good in the article and had a decent rating. Not many "quality" sites in Southern Florida, they all seem to be packing guests in like sardines. Not my kind of camping, like wide open space. A nice place to see, alternatively, is the Charleston S.C. area. Beautiful KOA in Mount Peasant S.C. just outside Charleston. and positioned 1 hr north of Savannah GA and 1 hr south of Myrtle Beach. Just a thought.

We just found another cancellation in the Keys, so I booked a week at Bahia Honda SP the week before our previous reservation at Curry Hammock (also a week). It really does pay to check the reservation website every few days. We are so psyched about two weeks in the Keys in our new Whitehawk. The trouble is, I now have to find a site for Saturday, April 11 in between the two reservations; hope it won't be too much trouble.

So our itinerary will now be 3 nights in Carrabelle at Ho Hum Campground, 4 nights at Koreshan SP, 1 or 2 nights somewhere in the Everglades (probably Midway), 8 nights at Bahia Honda, 7 nights at Curry Hammock, 4 nights at Sebastian Inlet SP, 3 nights at nearby Long Point County Park or up to Faver- Dykes SP, and 5 nights at Anastasia SP, then Ft. Clinch SP or home.

Thanks for all of your suggestions.

You will love Bahia Honda campground. Stayed there about 5 years ago and it's fabulous.
Happy camping
