UP Michigan: CGs and Sightseeing?

Some friends are planning to do a one week RV / motorhome trip this summer and were wondering if you have any suggestions for the Upper Peninsula of Michigan? Any specific RV parks or chains of parks you would recommend? Thanks.

Tahquamenon Falls (Upper & Lower), Bond Falls, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (boat cruise out of Munising), the Sioux Locks (at Sioux St. Marie) are all must see's. I really like camping in the State Parks - Michigan's UP has some great ones. They have electric only hook-ups (usually 30/50A), with water & dump stations near the entrances. Prices are reasonable, but you have to have a park pass (purchase one at Wall-mart or at the parks). You can plan your whole trip and make state park campground reservations on Michigan DNR's website - www.michigan.gov/dnr. Since it's all rural up there, most every town has a propane fill center. If you don't already have one, I might suggest picking up a copy of "DeLORME's Michigan Atlas & Gazetteer". It shows all the waterfalls, light houses, and other attractions, plus state parks & rec areas, private campgrounds, fishing hot spots, golf courses, high quality maps, and a whole bunch more. I've used it extensively during my travels through-out the state. If you're looking for a more "rustic" experience, I'm sure Rustic Eagle can give you some insight. He's been all over the state, and is always willing to offer assistance to JOF members.

I hope you have a great trip this summer, and come back often!

Check out some of the UP CG's referenced in the the following JOF social group "Michigan Campers and Campgrounds":

http://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/group.php?groupid=7

One of my favorite UP full hook-up CG's is Munising Tourist Park Campground because there is a lot to see and do in the area. Best to make reservations well in advance.

Ft Wilkins State Park in Copper Harbor is pretty neat during the summer. It is very historical and they have actors portraying actual people who lived and worked at the fort in it's time period. Brockway mountain is just outside of town. You can drive up to the top (I wouldn't try pulling an RV up the mountain, leave it at the state park campground). There are some awesome vistas to see from the top. On a clear day I've seen Isle Royal across Lake Superior.

We did a trip through the UP in 2008 and found many waterfalls and several lighthouses. Send me a PM with your email and I can send you the spreadsheet if that would interest you.

Thank you to everyone for the wealth of info -- I really appreciated it. I will spend some time digesting the info and circle back with questions if necessary.

dalenoel - thank you very much for the offer to send me your spreadsheet. After reviewing the above info, I may contact you at a later date.

Once again, thanks for all your input. Happy Easter to all.

Regards,
Greg

I would highly recommend checking out the open pit iron mine near Ishpeming. We found it a few years ago while driving around in the area. Its hard to find info on it, but if you do a little digging you can find it. You can go on a bus tour starting at the Ishpeming Mining museum. The name of the mine is the Tildon Iron Mine. The mine is active, so when you are on the bus you are surrounded by dump trucks and front end loaders that is MASSIVE next to a bus.

Visited the UP last summer. Very impressive!!! We stayed at the Munising Tourist Park CG. Got site #2 on the water. Very private. We also stayed at Brimley and Straits SP's. Straits was very short drive to ferry to/from Mackinac Island, a must do and see!

If you end up at the west end of the UP, check out Union Bay CG near Ontonagon, you won't be disappointed.
