Weekend winter trips in New Mexico?

I am looking for some good campgrounds that we might be able to go to in New Mexico during the winter months for small weekend trips. I am thinking of places like Carlsbad Caverns or other places where I can bring the kids and they can have something to do and stay somewhat warm...places that have visitor centers or museums or something of the like. The other thing that for at least this winter, I need to find a place that we can basically walk to from the campsite. My next purchase will be a trailer to hold my Expedition (when I am with the kids) and jeep/atv when we go crawling. I am hoping some of you guys have been around the country and can give me some insight of where to go.

Southern NM is great . Here are some suggestions:
Ruidoso NM
Cloudcroft NM
Silver City NM
Bosque De Apache Wildlife Refuge near Socorro NM
White Sands National Monument NM
Lincoln NM
Lincoln National Forest
Mesilla NM
Capitan NM

All of these have walkable RV Sites except for White Sands

We spent several days at Brantley Lake State Park a few years back and then explored the area along with a visit to the Caverns and Roswell.
The Park had electric and water but a separate dump station. We were on the south end of the loop after one night on the north end.

We also spent one night at Santa Rosa Lake State Park while traveling I-40 to NC. It was nice for the time we were there.

We liked Rockhound State Park near Deming, NM. You can dig for your own geode. The ranger will show you what to look for and you can hike up the into the hill from the campground and dig for your own. We did that with our daughter and she had some great souvenirs.

The few of the campsites are reservable so you can book ahead. The campsites have water and electric. Dump station is near the exit. You are up on a hillside so you can look out over and see the city lights in a distance.

There is also a winery about 2 miles away and was kid friendly as far as having the kids taste the grapes that they use to make the wine and they showed us where and how the wine was made.

Hope this helps.

South of Deming is Columbus NM it has a very nice little state park there and if you wish you can walk across the boarder to "The Pink Store" a destination for some.

Check out City of Rocks state CG. Its a short drive about 25 miles or so from Deming NM. Fantastic place for getting away from it all. Full hook ups & they have a small # of spots you can reserve & the rest is first come first serve.
