What makes it a resort?

Riddle me this Batman, what is the difference between a campground and a camping resort? We are out camping in Custer, SD at a great campground, but as we drive down the road we keep passing little places with a dozen back in sites, no grass, no trees, maybe a swing set, and stacked like sardines, but to read their sign at entrance they are a camping resort. Are there any standards for what's a resort? Maybe there should be.

That's a good question. We were out there last summer and noticed the same thing. Sadly I don't have an answer. I sure hope you aren't staying at Custer's Gulch.

Tiger Run RV Resort

Not sure of any specific definition or guidelines, but I (like many other forum members I'm sure) have stayed at places where the campground didn't quite measure up to their online pictures or description.

However I recently stayed at Tiger Run RV Resort near Breckenridge, CO. This facility is absolutely as nice and beautiful as their pictures depict. Tennis courts, indoor pool with 2 hot tubs, fitness room, paved streets, concrete pads for all sites, beautiful landscaping, very clean, etc. I absolutely consider this place an RV resort! It also has many homes interspersed with the RV sites, but they were all well-maintained and beautiful too. Would stay there again in a heartbeat!

Its usually about $50 more haha... And you pay extra for kids and animals...

I always thought it was their way of drawing in a higher class of RV'ers with the name RESORT...

When we stay at the camp grounds with hookups we seldom go away from our designated camping spot...

We just sit around the patio and relax in the front of our fire pit... Usually too much foot traffic for us...

Hi there Camping Couple. No, we are at Big Pines and love it here. It's more of a secluded place and no pool and only a small play area, but the sites are large and the owners are awesome. Not a lot for kids to do around here, but for us having deer in our site in the evening is much nicer. Just wish this was closer to home so we could come back.

The term "resort" is abused a lot. I was just in NH at a large lake and taking note of places to rent on the lake... all of which were called a resort although some ranged from full amenities like pool and restaurant to other places that resembled plywood shacks next to a dumpster.

Marketing - Pure Marketing.

If you like their amenities vs price, then it is a Resort for you.

The sign is usually about the only difference...I use reviews, google maps and word of mouth for my choices.

Problem is that you have to enter both resort and campground to do a good search of an area to find them all.

What makes a resort is a sign and a 25% increase in rates..

Amazing that they would resort to such subterfuge.

What else do they have to work with? Look around - it's South Dakota. Except for the Black Hills, it's pretty flat and plain. We lived there for 10 years, and there are no nicer people anywhere, but I prefer the Northwest mountains and forests. To me, a campsite in the mountains is totally a "resort"!

Greg Gerber of RV Daily Reports wrote an article recently describing RV Resorts.

What is a resort?
So many RV parks and campgrounds today brand themselves as “resorts,” but the industry lacks a definition and it is confusing to RVers who hear the word and expect a certain level of service to be offered. In fact, I consider it deceptive advertising to brand a campground a resort if it doesn’t offer:
An on-site food option
Escorts to the campsite
At least one open pool
Working internet connections
50-amp service
Paved roads
Paved and LEVEL sites
At least 25 feet between campsites
A well-stocked camp store
More than one working washer and dryer
Organized activities
Amenities beyond horseshoes
Attractive landscaping
There are some “resorts,” like Hersheypark campground, that deserve their self-proclaimed “resort” label for nothing more than the exorbitant fees it charges campers for incredibly few services.
Fortunately, the industry doesn’t have to reinvent the wheel here. Kampgrounds of America understands that the label applied to a campground sets customer expectations. So, the firm is rebranding all of its campgrounds into three levels – Journey (overnight), Holiday (short-term) and Resorts (destination) campgrounds.
People who reserve a spot at one of those branded campgrounds have a very good idea of what to expect when they arrive and there are fewer disappointments. If the industry were to adopt KOA’s resort requirements before the word could be used to describe a campground, it would prevent a lot of frustration and confusion.

The word "resort" is cheaper to paint on a sign than "campground".
