yellowstone/glacier trip

Hi, we want to visit these two national parks. We are retired so we love to travel in the spring or fall when the kids are in school. I would like advice on the best time to go--May or September? Thanks.

I camped one year at Glacier Meadow RV park around July 15. We had frost one morning, but otherwise the weather was nice and in the upper 70's for mid-day temperature. I have heard that May or Sept there would be a small chance of snow fall in Glacier Park, but maybe others would have a better idea on the weather for those months.

You may already know this but, the going-to-the-sun road in Glacier NP doesn't open until late June or even early July because of the snow. The NP website will list the historical opening dates for the going to the sun road, it is one of the highlights of the park.

Absolutely September, many of the roads are not even open in May before school gets out. I was just there a month ago and it was in the mid 30's at night (Yellowstone and surrounding area).

Good luck

A wise choice. We really like staying in Glacier Park at the Apgar campground.

Just be aware that the parks and facilities within Yellowstone usually close up around September 25. The national park website will list exact dates.

We went to Glacier for the 4th of July, and were disappointed that the GTTS road was closed. I must say that we stayed on the EAST side of the park & loved it immensely. There are a LOT LESS crowds there, and more to do.

We flew - so we didn't get to camp, but we would love to go back with our camper. The only problem is that it would take close to a week to get there from the Gulf Coast.

We would absolutely LOVE to make a trip that includes the Grand Tetons, Yellsowstone, Glacier, Lake Louise, and Jasper. They are all pretty much in a continuous line.

Of course once we got there we would have to sell the camper & truck, and then fly home.........

I'd definitely choose August/September over May.
