Does anyone use one? Your recommendations/thoughts....

Seems we'll be spending a lot of time at a site with no septic.. and I'm not looking forward to hauling the TT to the dump station every few days or having to always be conservative with facilities. A portable tank seems to be the answer.. and will come in handy for boondocking as well.

Here is a old thread from this forum on the subject. I have used a 15 gallon Barker blue boy for years and it suits my needs.

I have this one and it's indispensable when we stay anywhere for more than 3 days.

I saw one guy at a camp site had his big blue already in the back of his truck empty I am assuming... When he was ready to dump his trailer tanks he hooked up his FLOWJET 12VDC pump and dumped from the trailer using a 3/4-inch hose to the big blue tote already in his truck bed. The FLOWJET pump has a 12VDC remote control switch with it so somehow he was able to tell when the big blue was getting full.

Then he just drove to the dump site and let gravity flow empty his big blue...

I though that was nifty solution...

We don't have one yet.. but I know from doing research that if you search on the internet you can find competitive prices. I will have to order one from the USA because a decent size on here in Canada costs over $300. as compared to $150 in the USA. It was also suggested to me that if you are going to bother getting one, to buy one that is slightly larger than your holding tank (So it empties completely and you do not have to guess), and which can attach to the hitch on your TV in order to pull it to the dump easily.
That does bring up the issue however of where to store the darn thing... I guess we will put it in the back of our truck..

after finding out we were only going to have water and electric at our next haunt i went by and picked up one of these... the barker 4 wheel model in the 32 gallon size was only 8 bucks more that the 25 gallon version... so i figured, just get the larger size...

i really couldn't see the difference in one brand to the other, quality wise, between this, the thetford, and the tote n stor.....i just liked the fact that this one had a dump valve built in and didn't require lifting.... i'm no weakling, but 20+ gallons of water is NOT LIGHT.... i hope to never fill it to capacity...

thought about adding a tornado to this thing as well...

does anyone have any pointers for using these things?

We recently bought the Thetford 27gal model. We have already used it 3-4 times and it works great. I have been hauling it on the back ladder with no issues so far.

Be sure and get one with around 30 gal capacity. When using ours I like to totally empty the tank without shutting off the valve. Also the bigger the wheels the better. Tires with air are better than plastic ones. Side dump is the only way to go, no heavy lifting to empty it. I pull ours behind the truck or the quad.

We picked up the tote-n-stor, 32 gal, $180 at a local dealer. We'll give it a try this weekend and report back. Really wanted the Thetford but at $300 and limited use it was hard to justify double the price..

As Clutch said get the ones with the side dump valve... lifting them on end to dump is not good for your back...

I have been using a 15 gal Barker tote. I have to pull the tank up hill to the outhouse to empty it. I would not want a bigger tank for the following reasons. 1. It would be too heavy for me to pull up hill 2. When traveling it would take up too much room.

I have a Thetford 27 gallon. I would have to make two trips to the dump even with the larger size and this one fits nicely behind my hitch and the tailgate when traveling. Fortunately I was just upgraded to a host site that has a sewer hookup so I won't be using my tote again this summer.

LOL... funny, I was just doing some "maintenance" on the trailer! Got out of the Campground after the long weekend to find that the dump-station was "FULL" (as in, they couldn't accept any more dumps..). On the way home stopped off to empty the trailer in a few places only to find they either weren't accepting non-campers dumping or their fees were extraordinarily high ($15-20.00 per dump). Brought the trailer home with full tanks. We're heading out again to boondock and needed to do something - sooo...out came the buckets. Grey water into the garden, black to the toilet in the house. Glad our rule is no 'solids' in the trailer, but that'll be the last time I do THAT. Time to buy a tote!

You need a macerator pump and dedicate hose.... I often pump into my basement floor drain...
