My Utility Water Pump for Boondocking

Our limiting factor for boondocking is always fresh water. For the longest I would do like most people and lug a 5 gal water container up over my shoulders and strain and get soaked filling our water tank. A couple years ago I switched to a Warren 12 volt utility pump, but my son knocked it off the tailgate and it shattered. So I replaced it with a Harbor Freight utility pump.

The pump came with a 14inch cord with battery clamps, that wasn't going to do me much good so I added a rocker switch, and a 12 foot extension cord with a 12volt plug on the end. Then I installed a marine grade 12volt accessory plug and ran wires to the battery. I made a video of how it came out if you are interested. We used it all summer and it worked great. The main thing about all these little 12 volt pumps is not to run them dry. I think I spent a total of $50 (that's with buying the 2 year replacement policy on the pump). Let me know what you think.

You can get a water bladder from Camping World or Amazon that when not in use fold up to almost nothing. I have been using one for years now.

What took you so long.....

I also carry a folding two wheel tote to haul away my waste tank and bring back fresh water (not is same tank of course)...

I have no idea what the brand is of my 12VDC pump. Got it at WALMART...

Also some guys will use use a 120VAC water pump from a discarded Washing Machine... Alot of folks have inverters with their trucks (my 300W is mounted under my SuperCab rear seat) so coming up with 120VAC is not that much of a problem anymore...

My biggest problem was holding the 5-7 gallon jeri cans up to pour into the trailer manual feed port. With the external pump it fills in a breeze...

Lifting the cans was out-of-the-question with me. I had use a 2.5 gallon cooler in semi-emergency situations. But lifting and pouring a 5 gallon container? No way!

So, when we switched from hauling a full tank of fresh water to getting water after setting up, I bought two 6 gallon water jugs, a 120VAC transfer pump and 5/8 hoses. Add in the bucket that keeps the rain out of the tongue jack.

Fill the cans and the bucket. Haul back to the camper. Fire up the genset.
Throw 5 tbsp. of Clorox into the bucketful of water.
Use the pump to draw water from the bucket into the camper's FW tank.
Now the fun part: Pour the cans into the bucket as the pump is working....
Then manage the suction hose and tip the bucket to get the last few pints of water into the tank.
Shutdown the pump as soon as it hits air.
Turn off genset.
Drain water from pump and hoses. Stow for next use.

(We bring five 1 gallon containers from home for drinking water.)

You do what you have to do! I have a buddy who uses one of those big water bladders and a 12v pump to move it.

Since water is no longer a problem, SWMBO gets her 15 minute showers!

Does water from those water bladders have a funny taste to them? I know the water coming out of my CamelBaks taste funny.

To make the video? We've been using pump like this for a long time. This is our third pump as a matter of fact. The first one was made of caste-iron--lol.

It's just that very few people have made a video on it. I thought it might be helpful to those that are new to boondocking-- or even dry camping in general.

Wouldn't know.

We decided years ago that the fresh water tank does not contain drinking water. Washing & flushing only.

We would use a regular RV water pump mounted to a board. With the big bladder or a large water tank (we carried 70 gallons in a truck bed tank) you can then hook it to the city water inlet and pressurize that way if you want (works well) and it gives you an extra pump in case the RV pump fails.
