Extended Warranties

I am looking at the CoachNet extended warranty does anyone have any experience with them?

Not a fan of extended warranties. They would have been a money pit for me.

If you do the math, they rarely justify their cost.

BUT, if you happen to have a need for it, they can be worth the price of admission.

One of the few times we actually bought an extended warranty on some new appliances (wife insisted), two of the three cratered within a few months and although it was a nightmare getting them fixed, they did come in handy.

Some untrained monkeys came out three or ten times, talked to the real brains over the phone who tried to walk them through the repairs and of course, without any spare parts, wound up replacing just about everything inside them before they finally got fixed.

If you calculate what I make an hour and how much time I spent futzing with the repair personnel, I probably would of came out better just buying new units.

New unit come with factory warranty on all appliances & the extended warranty is a bet one of the appliance will fail. The extended warranty, about 2K, covers only the major appliances and most of them can be purchased for under 1K. Common failures like water pumps $100 so if you have any mechanical skills save the money.

I do have CoachNet break down service because lifting a 10K trailer takes large jacks just to change a tire. I have that stuff in my shop but don't want to waste space and carry the extra weight.

Not a fan! Put the $$$ in a contingency fund and leave it there for a future repair. OR spend it 2 or 3 years later for whatever RV related.

If anyone remembers Rusty Jones undercoating for your car. Part of the contract is to repair or refund your money.. Not a bad deal, someone tries to collect you give them their money back and they lost nothing...those that didn't collect were pure profit. Over the last 50 years If I would of paid for warranties for appliances, cars, houses etc I would of paid many more times what I may of collected. They have to make a profit, pay commissions etc out of the what they collect. So, I would guess MAYBE half of what they pay out is going to repair issues.
I agree with others, put the money aside and over time you will be far ahead. Good Luck.

I've always looked at extended warranties like I look at insurance and casinos: If they didn't bring in more money than they pay out, they wouldn't exist. They exist to make money. Yes they will pay out, but the vast majority of customers are going to pay without getting much in return. The entire industry was built on that premise.

If you read Trailer Life and Motor Home.. you will see one of the big complaints to the "action line" is the warranty people rejecting claims on technicalities.. that tells me all I need to know about it..

Not worth the paper they are written on. They will find a way to get out of anything after the manufacturers warranty runs out. Just saying from my own experience..

Going against the grain of this thread a bit, but I DID get one. I went with GoodSam, 7 year Gold + Tires w/ the option to pay in yearly installments. I use a Amex Preferred Blue card for 90% of my monthly purchases, so I save the cash rebate all year long. Most of the time I can pay off the GoodSam installment w/ the rebate I've accumulated all year.

I suppose the value also depends on the complexity of the RV. I'm covering a Greyhawk; so between the chassis, hydraulic levelers, auto step, 2 slideouts, onboard genny, etc., there is a lot going on in there.

Helps me sleep at night knowing I've got some coverage; and by gobbling up my rebate the cost never hits my bottom line.

When I purchase our trailer at the Dallas RV Show, they were offering "Free" 5 year extended warranty with purchase. My 2 year warranty expires this month and I've only had to bring the trailer in for warranty service once for minor stuff. I still don't have any problems that warrant taking the trailer back to the dealership for service under warranty. If the need arising, hopefully the 5 yr comes in handy!

That rebate would hit the bottom line if you didn't waste it on the EW. Sleep at night by knowing that you have a few $$'s set aside to pay for things that happen when you own toys. Usually these things are nothing more than prepaying one major repair. Put the cash aside and keep it as a slush fund for future repairs or upgrades.

Complete waste of money and basically pure profit for the dealer offering them.

Extended warranties ARE very much like insurance, life, cancer, auto, or disability, just to name a few. The reason for insurance is to cover a CATASTROPHIC event, not normally occurring in everyday life. Just look at what's happened down in Houston and the Central Texas area. About 90% of the people affected in the disaster zone don't have flood insurance. This is a rising water flood event, not covered under your homeowners insurance. People don't realize this, even though they don't live in a FLOOD PLAIN ZONE. FEMA is the only source for national flood insurance. Is it expensive, YES, until the day you need it. This is all a numbers game.

Group A is the total number of people, Group B is the number of people who are insured, Group C is the number of people affected by the disaster event. Group C has to be a smaller number for the equation to work, and show a positive balance. It never does, and that's where FEMA and the government come onto the scene. Some estimates are coming in at 100 BILLION dollars, I highly doubt it will actually be less than 180-200 BILLION, when all is said and done.

Only the wind damage from the tornadoes will be covered under your standard homeowners ins policy. In the overall scenario we're looking at, it's a microcosm of the total devastation. Understand, I'm not minimizing their pain in any way, it's just being stated as a fact. Wind damage vs. water damage was very small, comparatively.

A case in point, we rented a vehicle years ago, and got the CDW insurance. Collision Damage Waiver. I call it the "Days of Thunder" insurance. It's about 12-14 bucks a day, but you're covered for ANY damage to the vehicle. If you remember the movie, when they showed up at the hotel for the lunch with the NASCAR bosses, the cars were totally wrecked. In our case, we got caught in a hail storm here in Austin, and the van was totally beat up, but luckily no windows were broken. Handed over the keys when we brought it back, and the agent just looked at the van and shook his head. IF we hadn't got the extra insurance, our auto insurance company would have been charged for the repair of that vehicle. Also, the rental company CAN & WILL charge your insurance for each day of loss of use that the vehicle is in the shop. That's the dirty little secret MOST people don't know.

Okay, where does my info come from. Well my wife has been writing auto/commercial & business insurance for better than 15 years. We know the system. I've been a licensed life/health agent some years ago. We've also owned several businesses, so we've been around the block, so to say.

Bottom line, insurance is expensive UNTIL you need it, and use it. Anytime I rent a vehicle we get the CDW insurance, yes, I haven't needed it, but I feel a lot better knowing I'm covered versus what MIGHT happen. When we bought our '14 Ford Escape, we purchased the extended warranty and service plans. When we traded it in, we applied for the refund of the extended warranty we hadn't used. I got a check back for $1400, which was twice of what I expected. That would be something to ask when you are looking at the financing, make sure you can get a refund of unused portion of the warranty.

Insurance is expensive and in many cases totally not necessary. Save your money and prefund your own repairs or life challenges. LIke I said before, EW's are basically costing you the first significant repair [Engine, tranny etc]. Put that money aside and you'll have it when you need it. Health and auto are another story but not everyone needs life insurance. I have very little life insurance now. My kids are all educated and my wife will live very well if I were to kick off.

I'm in the camp that believes you if you have toys you need to be able to pay to maintain them. If this last poster added up all the $$ he has spent on DWavier on rental cars, extended warrantees, etc he could have paid cash for that car damaged in the hail storm. To each their own. You do it your way and some of us will go a different direction.
