12 volt system

This is a dumb question, but how does one disable the 12 volt system on a camper?

When I flip the master battery 12 volt switch at the battery, does that disable the system even if the camper is plugged to the 120 volt electricity?

Yes, most of it. On my rig, it won't turn off the propane detector, levelers, or slide motors. Your rig could be different.

Thank you, it is the propane/co detector I need to change out. Guess I will just do it hot.

The 120 volt plugin connects to your converter, which in turn, energizes your 12 volt circuits unless you pull the master fuse(s) for your 12 volt system, those circuits could very well remain energized even with no battery on the camper at all.

I'd test this with a multi-meter, but my understanding is that if you are plugged into shore power, your converter is going to supply 12 volt power weather you have a battery in play, or not.

Are you trying to work on the wiring of the 12 volt side while plugged into shore power? Might help if we knew what you were trying to accomplish.

ETA - just saw your last reply.. I'd just disconnect the battery by unhooking the negative ground, and unplug from shore power too for good measure. Dont know what kind of camper you have, but usually disconnecting the battery for real - takes less than 3 minutes.

This is correct. All systems will function while plugged into shore power in a travel trailer. Motor homes may be different.

You should be able to pull a fuse to disable power to the Co2 detector.

Yes, pull fuses one by one until the device is disconnected.
