30 amp surge protector install

I plan on ordering an EMS-HW30C Progessive Industuries Surge Protector today and having it installed in our 26RLS 2011 Jay Flight. I have some doubts about the cheaper/smaller (protable) units. I personally don't think it's too much overkill.

Comments and Advise Please.

I have one of the Progressive plug-in-the-pole units and have no complaints. I think the only way to know for sure is to buy cheaper and later discover it wasn't up to the job (which may never happen).
I've read several horror stories about bad things happening to unprotected electronics and figure I'd go cheap on my beer/wine choices. There's folks that have been doing this for years with no surge protection and have had no problems ( like Harry Callahan says, "Do ya feel lucky? Well, do ya?")

I have been using this: http://www.rvupgradestore.com/Portab...-p/55-2569.htm for several years.

It works fine and when I am in a 30a site, I just use a 30-50 dogbone at the box. My experience is the portables cost more than the built in one.

Wilcut---I installed the EMS-HW30C Progessive Industuries Surge Protector in my 2013 26 BH after I purchased it. It was the first thing I did to it. I have not had any issues with the system and it has always worked great for me. I installed it my self. It took about an hour--only do the fact it is a bit of a tight space. I also like the fact I have the little monitor inside the trailer so I can glance at the amount of amps, watts etc being used. Many folks use the portable ones and they work fine. I installed the hardwire systems because I did not want to worry about having it "walk away" or digging it out each time I plugged in. I do know they make locks for the portable ones, but once again it was something I did not want to deal with. I feel the hardwire and the portable ones work the same--it just comes down to the $$$$ and the little extra time it takes to connect and secure the portable one.

We also installed this same protector in our 26RLS. Took less than an hour and we don't have to worry when we set up camp about the electrical service as its online immediately, not something else we have to haul out and set up and lock.

I use the SurgeGuard 30A Portable EMS. Considered a hardwired unit, but realized this is our first TT and as our family grows we will trade up TT and I didn't want to keep removing/reinstalling the EMS. I use the molded clam-shell housing and lock to secure it. If I thought we would keep this TT for several years I would have installed one, but this portable works great.

Installed the OEM in trailer 30 Amp version last year. Good thing I did.
After you first plug your trailer in it takes a minute or two before power is turned on to the trailer. It goes through a bunch of self check functions.
Thought about the outside pole version but then it's too easy for someone to steal it. They're not cheap..
Happy trails,

Does installing a hardwired unit affect (like void) the warranty?

Only if you misswire it or if it does damage...

Funny but I've never read where someone's trailer took a direct lightening hit and their unit got fryed. Of course I would rather replace the surge protector than all the electronics inside my trailer.
Happy trails,

I also installed the EMS-HW30C last spring, easy install and no problems. I leave my TT plugged in all the time at home so it's nice not have the portable unit exposed the weather year round, like the 2+ feet of snow we have right now.

Happy trails,
I was in for a little service on my new Jayco, and one of the employees pointed out a 3 month old Jayco 5'er in for repairs. I believe the number he mentioned was $5000.00 in damage from a surge. He said to me, 'Get yourself a surge protector' and I did so immediately! I guess it doesn't happen often, but if it is yours.....

I am sure glad this topic is still active,
Here is the deal, I have an older 5th we keep at a year around camp site at a lake it takes a 50 amp plug. For all kinds of reasonings wife and I bought a 21' Jayco TT to travel in and it has a 30 amp. Ok,,,I sure can see the advantage of a inside surge, and if it was just for the jayco this is the way I would go. But as of late, a couple of years now, every time we go to the 5th the LED clock is blinking its power has been shut of and restarted due to a power failer.

So this little voice keep saying you had better get a surge protector, but I ask myself for both !~!!! So if I bought one of these portable 50 amp models for the 5th year around, then when we traveled un plug the 5th 50 amp take along on the jayco. Plug one of these small 50 to 30 amp adapters into the male from the extension of the Jayco TT then into the lower 50 amp female portable then would I be ready to go for power to the 30 amp Jayco ??
Also, are these portable models to large not to be stuffed up into the inter part of these outside metal campground boxes ,and then shut the lid to lock at the bottom to hide. Outher wise I will have to disconect the 5th to store such, ever time we leave due to theft ?
