96 Jayco Eagle SL256, 26'

I am going to go look at a 96 Jayco Eagle SL256, 26' and wondering are there anything I should look for in particularly for this year and model.

I would also be interested if anyone could provide the weight for this unit.

I have a Chevy Silverado 5.3 with towing package and want to make sure this unit is a good match for this truck.

Any and all info certainly appreciated.

Thanks

Dennis

Jayco has archives on their website, but unfortunately they only go back 10 years. Perhaps a call to them could yield the info you desire. BTW, welcome to the forum!

Dennis,

Welcome to JOF

I don't have any info on the 1996 model (should be a weight sticker on a inside cabinet door), but I do have some info on the 1999 Eagle Lite 256 (rear kitchen, front queen), which may put you in the ball park:

1999 Eagle Lite 256
UVW: 4,200lbs
Dry Tongue Weight: 470lbs
GVWR: 6,400lbs
CCC: 2,200lbs (no options)
Fresh Tank: 36 gal.
Grey Tank: 25 gal.
Black Tank: 37 gal.

Once you confirm the weights of the 1996 model, ignore the unloaded weights, work with "loaded" weights even if you have to make an assumption. Figure the "loaded" tongue weight should be around 13% of the "loaded" TT weight.

With any brand used TT, check the roof very closely, and look for any signs of moisture damage inside and out.

As far as your 5.3L Silverado, would need to know the specified weight limits to comment on it's compatibility. Assuming that it's configured properly it should tow the TT you are looking at.

Hope this helps.

Bob

Thanks for the information and I believe the way the truck is equiped 7000 towing weight is what it is rated.
1999 Eagle Lite 256
UVW: 4,200lbs
Dry Tongue Weight: 470lbs
GVWR: 6,400lbs
CCC: 2,200lbs (no options)
Fresh Tank: 36 gal.
Grey Tank: 25 gal.
Black Tank: 37 gal.

UVW: 4,200lbs is this the trailer weight?

GVWR: 6,400lbs is this the total load weight?

So you have the UVW and the CCC for the total weight?

Thanks Again this has been very helpful and hope I am understanding this!

Dennis

Hope these are not too dumb of questions for a novice!

Dennis,

All good questions.

All the information I provided was from Jayco's 1999 product brochure.

UVW: unloaded trailer weight at the factory, but is not the actual ship weight.

GVWR: maximum weight that the TT can weigh when loaded

The actual ship weight may add another 200lbs-300lbs to the published UVW, which means the actual CCC will decrease.

Yes, the published CCC is basically the difference between the published UVW and the published GVWR.

For example:

(UVW 4,200lbs) + (250 lbs account for Ship Weight) + (700lbs for camping cargo/stuff, fluids not included) = 5,150lbs Loaded TT weight

In regards to your trucks 7,000lb "published" Tow Rating, please note that this isn't your "actual" tow rating. The following link will clarify: http://www.jaycoowners.com/showthrea...uot-Tow-Rating

Even though your actual tow rating will be less than 7,000lbs, IMO a TT with a loaded weight (ready to go camping) around 5,500lbs would be ideal (possibly a little higher).

On Edit: The 700lbs for cargo/stuff is a rough "average" assumption, you actual loading habits may differ.

I would look for water stains on the ceiling and soft spots on the floor which tells me water has leaked in from somewhere. Also, check the tires for cracking and wear. Check awning for cracking, tears and workability.
