AC Filter

Anyone use a non "OEM" AC filter? I have taken mine down and cleaned it but looking for another option. Anyone see anything wrong with cutting a good home ac filter to fit and using it?

Thats a good thought...you got my mind in 'modify' mode. The filters on our Carrier unit are just plastic formed/framed (& washable) particle filters that slide in. They really don't do much filtering IMO. However, if I were to wrap them tightly with a woven fabric of some sort, that might increase the effectiveness of the filter (but not wrap it so much that it creates a restriction). The trick will be getting the filter back in- they don't slide so well and tolerances are rather tight.
I might experiment!

We have the coleman i believe and i have to take the cover and controls off to get to ours. Would a home ac filter be too restrictive?

Just be careful you all don't restrict the airflow too much. It doesn't take too much restriction to cause the evaporator coils to ice up. The better the filtration, the less you will have to clean the coils but also the sooner you will have to clean/change the filter to avoid excessive restriction.
