Aluminum Wheels Hot

After airing up the tires to 65lbs. Took a trip down the interstate for a few miles then around town with several stops. All went well but when I got home my rims were hot to the touch. I have a timed brake controller which I had set aggressive. I like to feel the brakes grab first and let go last. Could this be the cause of the hot wheels. Mechanic says grease was good.

If you use your brakes a lot, the drums can get hot and the rims can get hot from the drum. Or, the brakes may be adjusted a bit too tight. Or, sunlight can make tires and rims hot. Were each of the rims hot? Or maybe just those that were on the sunny side of the trailer? If just one rim was hot, maybe only that rim's brakes are adjusted a bit too tight.

Very likely, yes, especially with around town, stop and go driving. The aggressive setting is trying to stop the whole rig for a time.

Can you try it again with a different brake controller setting? That would a good test.

Not to mention the chance of "warping" the rims.....just saying

You can get a Lazer Infrared Thermometer to check you wheels (and tires) periodically to see exactly how hot they are. Harbor Freight has them pretty cheap (like everything at HF).

Took it back out and scaled back the brake controller. Less hot were the rims but still too hot for me. Tomorrow I'll check the brakes for adjustment. I suspect them to be set to tight. Great videos on this on You-tube and its easy too. Maybe I'll flush the old grease out and put new in also through the EZ lube zert. But I am leery of that due to all the negative EZ lube comments that I've seen. I'll check adjustment first.

I set my brakes to augment my truck, in other words, the truck should start braking first, the trailer should grab lightly, don't plan on your trailer doing most the work, it's not designed for that and the pads will be short lived.

I also have a manual transmission by choice and I let my engine do most the braking

You don't ever want your brake controller set to aggressively. you will flat spot the tires. Possibly even causing them to blow.
