Anodes for Atwood water heaters

I see in the CW web site they have an anode specificly for an Atwood water heater (magnesium aloy). Local RV dealer/parts house also has them listed. This seems a departure from Atwood recommendations.
Anybody?

The newer Atwood's DO NOT need them. The vendors of these things want to sell. Most (not all) of them are more interested in their profit, not your need.

Mine does not have one either, just the plastic drain plug. I believe the Suburban water heaters call for the anode.

Yeah Crab, I've got the plastic plug too (and a couple of spares in my goody bag). I was surprised to see the anode for Atwoods, I don't recall seeing one prior so thought it must be a new product but like TnChuck points out maybe it's the older ones that need them (maybe). My owner's says no anode needed so that's what I'm going with.
Possible I never noticed the Atwood rods 'cause Atwood said I didn't need one, but they were there all along.

TnChuck, you are spot on, my NEEDS vs the dealer's WANTS usually don't line up too good.

As you can see, I have a 2011 22 FB which I recently bought used from a Jayco dealer. It was getting down to 29 degrees last Friday night where we were camping, so I took out the (metal) plug to drain the tank before we left. There is definitely an anode rod attached to the plug and it's pretty corroded looking. Maybe the previous owner thought it should be there. Should I replace this with a plastic plug and ditch the anode. Some posts on the site say the magnesium rod is bad for the tank.

Is this an Atwood water heater or Suburban? I think Jayco uses both..........

Pretty sure an Atwood, but the documentation is in the trailer -- both 25 miles away. I'll check next Friday when I pick it up to go camping.

I had an Atwood water heater in my motorhome. It was 9 years old when I bought it, I used it for 10 years, no anode rod ever, no problems.

Yep, my 10 gal Atwood is 9 model years old, and has always had just the plug - no anode. Manual says nothing about replacing any anode, so I assume it doesn't need one. Have replaced the nylon plug with a nylon 1/2" X 1/4" nylon bushing, and threaded a brass T valve into the bushing, so it can be drained without removing anything.

Just curious how you flush the crud out of the tank with this mod? Thanks.

We use our own filtered and softened well water in the 5er. Thus, we have never had any serious crud in the HW tank. However, I do occasionally (like every couple of years or so) remove the nylon bushing and insert a tank flusher tube on the end of a garden hose, just to be sure. Have never had much of anything cruddy come out. But just for routine tank drains, like winterizing, I just open the T valve and let it out, then leave the valve cracked open slightly for the winter.

We had an Atwood water heater in our old Jayco, 1993 Eagle 215SD and it only had the plastic plug. Never had a problem with crud. New Jayco must have the Atwood because all there is is the plastic plug.

We have had two Greyhawks with Atwood heaters, neither of them had anodes in them. Have not had any problems.
