Another Awning in the Wind Question

I camp regularly at a race track and lots of people camp in rentals that are delivered to their site for them. When they deliver these trailers, they extend the awnings, then leave the far edge of it lowered as close to the ground as possible. I assume they do this to protect it from the wind 'till the campers show up a day or two later.

It seems to work, and it's a good way to keep things dry in front of your camper if you're expecting rain while you're away or at night though it does make it difficult to open the door. (So that's why they have the rounded tops on them!) Has anyone else heard of this?

I'm guessing the awnings are put out for a couple of reasons. First, I'd think it's so rain would run off. Maybe to keep a space between them, and the next one coming in beside them. Also, a convenience, in case the renter doesn't know the right way to open it up(?). Up or down, the wind can wreck any awning, if it's strong enough, and blowing in the right direction. Just a thought.
