Another LED thread...

Converting to LED. In my past trailer I went the EBAY supercheap direct from China route. I bought a few versions before I found some that were acceptable, but none were great.

Now I know "Great" LED bulb replacements are expensive, $10+ each. I not prepared to get that good yet -- but I am looking for options between the $1 ebay options and the $10+ super premium option.

I came across the following on Amazon, anyone here have experience with these? There in the $8 each range so, certainly not cheap when you need 23 of them.

280 Lumen
5050 LED
4000-4500 Natural White Color Temp

http://www.amazon.com/Gold-Stars-921...productDetails

and

190 lumen
5050 LED
4000-4500 Natural White Color Temp

http://www.amazon.com/Gold-Stars-921...9HPF8P0DSPF38N

If anyone has any experice please share.

I may just take the gamble and go for it.

We keep meaning to do the LED switch over and will probably just grab a couple bulbs from camping world each time we go down.

I took the plunge and bought 12 of each the 190 lumen and 280 lumen. I'll know in a couple weeks if this was a $180 mistake or not -- I'm confident they will be be better than the super cheap eBay options I've used in the past.

I plan to use the 280's in the primary overhead lights and the 190s in the bunks and under cabinet areas.

The interesting thing is I found the exact same bulbs on an RV supplies sites, they were asking $15.95 each.

I received the LED replacement bulbs earlier in the week and was able to install them today. I must say I am very pleased. They are noticably better than the super low cost ebay types I had used previously. I tried several of the ebay options, although they worked they were always cool white, even when they claimed warm white light, and ran hotter than I felt an LED should run. In fact the first set I used were the LED Panels that attached with double-sided tape. In no time at all they got so hot the tape would shrivel and release. Then I went to puck type, they were much better but still not as bright as I would have liked and the light was too cool (blue tint)

The Gold Stars LED repalcement bulbs I linked to above are certainly more expensive (~$8), but you get what you are paying for. As I mentioned I bought both 190 Lumen and 280 Lumen bulbs. They are both very bright, however I am not sure I can really notice much difference between the two, and they don't have the blue tint.

The construction of the bulbs looks very nice. No DOAs bulbs or individual LEDs with any of the 24 I received. I noticed they are polarity neutral as well. My previous ebay experience requried the bulbs to be inserted one-way only or else they wouldn't come one. I am confident they will last, however I can't attest to their longeivty yet and I only had them on for about an hour.

Although I bought in lots of 6 and 12, they came individually packaged in "retail ready" sealed plastic clamshell packaging. Very professional compared to the ebay products that simply came bulk in a padded envelope. I did find the same ones listed on an RV Supply site for ~$16 each, and in comparing to the $15-$20 I have seen in some retail RV supply stores the Gold Stars from Amazon appear to be equal in quality and output.

Mine are 4000-4500 natual white color temp...after installing them I would say this is accurate.

Pictures to follow

I'll update with longevity after a few trips.

Just returned from 5 nights of no hookup camping in Yosemite NP. These LEDs bulbs performed flawlessly. We all know how much better LEDs are on current draw, these are no exception -- but these are 100% better light/heat output and color then any of the super value EBAY options I have tried in the past.

I am satisfied and to me they are absolutely worth the extra $.

Now if my truck tires were as good -- had the left rear tread separate on the way up. Not a fun experience. First tire failure I have ever had, either vehicle or trailer. interesting thing is I felt the tire coming apart but the TPMS never indicating a loss of pressure and the sidewalls remained in tact. Looked very much like a recap separating -- but they certainly weren't recaps.

I would be wary as they look identical to some much cheaper led bulbs and there is only TWO reviews which could have been done by the guy selling them!

I would be interested in a link to the much cheaper identical bulbs you mention. I spent considerable time searching for led bulbs that published specifications but couldn't find the ones that were bright enough to use a replacement to halogen and either natural white or warm white by the color temp spec -- not the description. I tried several super cheap options and these are the first I have been happy with so I wanted to let everyone know they exist in the mid-price category.

If you do I fact have a lead on comparable lower cost bulbs post the link as a favor to others. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be interested.

I do agree it was a bit of a gamble considering the lack of reviews, but then I started looking at the totality of reviews for the various "Gold Stars" brand options. The problem is the same bulb is sold as a single, two-pack, six-pack, twelve-pack, etc and each only has limited review. Then I determined it was all a review of the same product really, the "sold in" quantity shouldn't have any affect on the quality and performance, right?

Maybe i'm nieve, but have replaced my outdoor lights with LED, and have replaced my over sink lights with LED, since those are the ones on the most. Both those would get really warm with standard bulbs and now are cool to touch even if left on overnight. I plan to replace my other interior lights next season. I have used modest priced builds I purchased from Amazon, and will probably do that again. Have not experienced any issues so far. If I remember right, my over sink lights were 921 base and the others are G4 base. Not sure about the reading lights in the bedroom. They look different.

Thanks for the links and review clubhouse. Keep us posted. I'd like to switch to LEDs before next camping season.
