I'm sure you use the awning hook when rolling back up. Don't tie a piece of rope to the strap....don't do it. That piece of rope will act like a whip regardless of length and beat the crap out if the side of your coach when traveling. Rather, you can loop a 6' strap or rope thru the loop and grab both ends when rolling up. When the awning is safely stowed just pull the strap or rope out of the loop and stash it away with the hook.
The original strap is the length it us for a good reason.
