Battery Case

Went out this morning to check the water level in my battery as suggested in this forum and found something i wasn't expecting. Brought the new trailer home in January and plugged in to shore power and it hasn't moved while we are waiting for spring. Took the top the top off the battery case and found the battery immersed in water right to the top of the case. Fortunately the battery was just slightly taller than the case. The top has two nice vents, but the case itself has no drain holes. Once i got the battery unhooked and removed there was about an inch or two of water in the case. By the way the case does have drain holes now...... Not pleased could have caused big problems i am betting. Not sure if the pictures will show it very well but see below. Anyone seen this before??

YEP! Seen it many times, especially in boats. That is until I learned to drill a couple 1/4" holes in the bottom of each battery box I have. Rain water will fill it up faster then you might think through those top vent holes. Only possible downside would be a boil over or busted battery in which case acid could run down on the frame. But I have not actually seen that happen in my 30+ yrs of having batteries. And most cars have no box at all to catch any acid overflow.

Yes, mine collects water tho I've not seen as much as you. Most was about 2" with the battery in the case. I drilled 4 1/4" or 3/16" (don't remember which) holes in the batt box to let it drain. Holes in the top, no holes in the bottom and water collects. Who'd think that would happen!
I seem to recall reading another post where the holes were recommended (not my original idea).

What actually upset me was that the dealer delivered it like this. I can't believe they haven't seen this before and would either use a different product (battery case) or modify this one prior to delivery.

My TT came with no box, no battery and no propane. Said that was extra, I thought it was standard. Plus no "starter" package as some say they get like sewer hose etc. I had to argue for the spare tire cover that was clearly seen on the internet sales pic. They bought one and mailed to me as well as the missing inline water filter. Also the tow safety chains were so short couldn't even make it to the hitch straight(uncrossed). Made my own and billed them. I didn't mind the battery etc. cause I broke it off in them when it came to sales price. They were glad to see me go.

The battery boxes are made sealed so they wont leak acid on the floors of boats and on the carpet. It wont hurt anything having water around the battery, i was told by a interstate battery rep that it was good for the batt in extreme hot temps it helps keep the battery cooler. Heat kills batterys, for those in extremely cold regions it be best to keep them drained to keep from freezing.

Thanks for the reminder. Our 5th wheel didn't need a drain but our new travel trailer does. I had to do this on our Prowler travel trailer about 17 years ago.

Thanks for this thread

I just went to install my battery and found 2" of ice in the case. Came back home and did a search and found this thread. Thanks to everyone for the advice!! Holes will be drilled.

Drilled a few holes in our previous TT's battery case bottom after reading about this a couple of years ago. Just got our new TT and went to do the same, lo and behold it was already done for me by the dealer it seems. Put a little smile on my face that morning.
