Black Tank

Going to take the new TT out for a quick shakedown run this weekend. Want to use all the systems to make sure everything is in working order before our weeklong camping trip to the Adirondacks next month. This is also our first camper with a black tank. I've heard you shouldn't dump the black tank too much because there won't be enough liquid to clear it out. Should I clean out the black tank after only a two night trip? I doubt it will be very full, but my instinct is to empty it since it will be sitting unused for a month. The TT has a black tank flush, so I would think just filling it up and then dumping would be a good idea. Thoughts?

Yes, dump it. Also, its good to get as much water as possible into the tank. Just before you leave your camp to dump, fill the tank up (NEAR full) with the campsite water or use up your fresh water tank if no water hookup. For just 2 days, also a good idea to use more than normal with each flush.

I'd empty it and use the flush to flush everything out.

While the manual says that the valve must be OPEN when using the flush, I do close it to allow the tank to fill with water to force flush everything when the valve is opened. This is NOT recommended by Jayco, but I only fill it for a minute or so then pull the valve.

After you dump, close the valve, then add a few gallons of water and some chems.

I also do this... but don't walk away from it as it's very easy to forget about and you'll have a mess. I forgot once and caught it just before a gigantic mess. Could have been bad. Now while I'm flushing the black tank. Its my only job at the time!

+1!

It's WAY too easy to get sidetracked on something else, then the next thing I would hear would be screaming from inside (where DW is packing things up). It's usually a long walk home...

I don't drain my black tank every time out. If I know I will be using the camper again with in a couple weeks of its last use, I will wait until its close to full which has in the past been almost the whole summer. But, if its going to sit for more than a couple weeks unused after its last use, I will empty...

Wow, I'd say so. If you don't fill it up with waste while you are camping, fill it up before you leave and flush the tank. No good comes from leaving sludge in the black tank. That is just inviting problems.
