Bugged by Bugs While Camping

Hi All,
Just wondering how you all deal with pesky critters when camping. I know they are a part of the nature thing, but I have to say, I'm not very happy about it! Ha! More details: http://cuontheroad.net/confessions-of-an-insectophobe/
I know there's some good stuff out there to fight insects to help camping be more comfortable. We use some good stuff. But I'm wondering what works for you?

Thanks!
Chris (Roadster)

We use any dry spray powder with the highest Deet content. However, while up in Nova Scotia last Spring, nothing worked against the Black Flies. The only thing to do was to put one of those net type hats over your head to keep them away. Nice fashion statement .

There are lots of good reviews on the thermacell systems but I have no personal experience with them.

My DW gets serious welts from Black Flies, No-see-ums, mosquitoes, etc. The only thing that works for her is Iguana Oil. Weird name, but it works. You can check it out online and buy it through Amazon.

She worked at a wild animal park near us and tried all kinds of products. Some did help and some did not; the 'Off Deep Woods' towelettes - 25% Deet - did help (she even stuck them on her hat). Her coworkers told her about Iguana Oil. That worked even better!

As a plus, she found Iguana Oil very soothing when applied directly onto a bite when she did get bit. The usual anti-itch products helped her only a little, if at all.

We live in AZ and have not encountered the SWARMS of Black Flies and Mosquitoes that some of you have. In those situations, netting seems to be a logical defense.

What I do is setup one of those clip-on desk lamp over in the corner of the camping spot. When I look over there it is loaded down with all kinds of flying critters so 25-30 feet away from us... Actually I usually use two of these with one pointing down and the other one pointing up. This gives us old folks a fighting chance finding our trailer when we go to the bathroom...

Some say this only draws more flying things into your area but seems to work for us pretty good.

We have the rope lights up under the awning which does not draw insects and does light up our sitting area rather well...

I swear by the Thermacell. I hunt in an area that you literally cannot stand to be in without one. The mosquitoes will eat you alive.
Fire up the Thermacell no problem. Bought one for the camper as well

I have been known to setup a small fan and sit directly in it's blast path. The little critters can't handle the wind. HA HA
Works great when it's hot out as well. Otherwise it's Deep Woods Off with the Deet.

When the bugs are really bad, I find a smoky fire works very well. Only problem is I do not like smoky fires. I have been thinking about locating a small bug light to put out in the back forty to see what happens.

If you camp in dryer regions, bugs are a non issue We were in the Trinity Alps working two years ago, bout a half mile off the lake. We sat outside almost every night and were never bothered by bugs, but, not much rain there either. Same with Durango Colorado last year, very few bugs, since we were just south of town more in the high desert type vegetation and little rain. It would actually rain in town and we were 5 miles south it didn't rain.

I was pretty skeptical when my wife bought these but they work surprisingly well.

Clip-On Mosquito Repellent | OFF!® Insect Repellents

I may look for a thermacell too to try out. Probably a similar technology.

Cheers

My wife bought them for us too. I was like you, very skeptical, but they worked really well in panhandle of FL last summer.

I've never dealt with black flies yet. They sound nasty!

We use the ThermaCELL Lantern and the personal ThermaCELL. Both are effective. I think the OFF! product works similarly.

I would love to camp where there are no bugs!

Ha! Doesn't the fan cancel out the ThermaCELL because it blows the vapor stuff away?

Interesting, so the mosquitos are attracted to the light (and not to you)?
