Camping close to home?

This past weekend we camped really close to home and found a nice spot within half hour of our house. It was very nice and we felt like we were away from. This was our first trip of the season so we had to reload the trailer with all the necessary and unnecessary gizmos and gadgets. Who camps lose to home and do ou enjoy it? We are going back in May. With high fuel prices this kind of makes some sense. For those in the vancouver lower mainland area here is the link to the campground. This is the third time we have stayed close to home at different places and have enjoyed two of them.

My wife, daughter and I do a lot of camping about 45 minutes from home. It is a nice get away and very relaxing. With the fuel prices the way they are it appears near home camping will be more of a routine for now.

We camp close to home all the time & love it. Our favorite spot is 25 minutes from home. but it feels as if we are farther away. It only has 30 sites & is electricity only, but we don't need any more than that. It is on a river.

Where we live in northern there are probably 40+ campgrounds with in 1 hr of the house. In May we will be going the farthest, 2hrs away to the UP of Michigan. Our site is on the shore of Lake Superior. We are really looking forward to that.

We go to ft desoto, approx 20 mins from home, just across tamp bay. We can see the inlet to our canal from their beach....love it.

For us it was because the mountain areas are all covered in snow and we didnt want to cross the border on Easter weekend. We knew of this place and thought we would give it a try. I even went to work from he campground on Friday, which was a first for me. The weekend was perfect as far as the weather, only complaint is it is located near a main rail line so lots of trains go by day and night.

All of our camping is within 2 hours from home, with the exception of a few Florida trips. Tcijoe, you are a lucky man, we've camped at Ft. DeSoto a number of times and loved it. Only problem is we drive 1000 miles to do it, part of the experience, I guess.

95% of our camping is at the same campground, about 25 minutes from home. It's great because it's on the beach and everyone can still commute to work so you don't even have to take vacation time. Family and friends can visit too since it's so close.

It's kind of funny because that is one of the major reasons we upgraded from our 17z. IT turns out that a LOT of people commute to work from here so you get woken up early in the morning with people in their diesel trucks going to work. You can imagine hearing the roar of a diesel engine at 5am when it's parked less then ten feet from your hybrid bunk. lol

Our favorite campground is 30 minutes from home. We love it.
Last summer, my DW and our friend's DW spent 7 days there. We(the husbands) worked that week. We'd drive there after work and stay the night, then drive to work every morning. The DW's enjoyed staying the whole week at the campground relaxing, walking, reading and riding bikes.

Our regular spot is 27 mins from home. It's far enough away to be away. We spend 20+ nights there a season.

We have not camped outside the Commonwealth of Virginia in over 10 years, and most have been within 2 hours or less of home. We live in the country on 5 acres surrounded by farmland, horses, cattle, etc., so "driveway" camping is always an option that feels like getting away, especially when money is tight.

We use Westmoreland State Park as our home camp site - nice camp ground - nice folks that run it - always got that feel welcome feeling... This is some 45 minutes away

This is where we do our major shake down for mods and setups for longer trips...

I think everyone should have a so called "home camp site" close by...

We have 3 great CG's within 1 hour of home and Hocking Hills is 2.5 hours.
Most of our camping is done at these locations.
We are just now venturing out on longer trips now that we're retired.
We will still camp locally and plan 2 longer trips per year.

I have been camping at Versailles State Park in Indiana since I was a baby, then with my own family.
When I pull into there, I am just filled with all the great memories over the years.

When I die, my ashes will be spread over CG "A" at Versailles :-)

We'll be pushing to get a lot of camping in this season. Since we both work, most trips (save for a week in July and a week in August) will be after work on Friday through Sunday. Luckily, living in the middle of New York state affords us tons of places to camp, both state run and private. There are other places I'd like to check out, but when it comes down to it, we never want to waste camping time driving somewhere. So we get more bang for our buck (in the sense of time) by staying close to home.

That is very close to our new home that we will be taking possession of at the beginning of May. Thought of trying a weekend there....we usually head up to Golden Ears for a majority of our camping but this year we have booked up at Alice Lake for end of May and the Canada Day long weekend.

Thanks for the link. We are in NW Washington less than 3 hrs from Vancouver so this would be an easy trip for us. Looks like a nice campground.

Pam is a teacher. During the school spring break we set up at a campground about 15 miles form home and abour 5 miles form my work. I go into work from there and Pam hangs out at the CG with the dogs. She gets a short vacation form the home routine and it's a change of pace for me too.

Funny you should ask--- my DH is in the IT industry and is either on call or installing/running jobs on the weekends. We are just getting into camping (bought Jayco last summer) and found if we wanted to camp it would have to be close.

There's a wonderful place just 15 minutes from us, unfortunately, everybody else loves to go there! You have to practically give blood and your firstborn to get a spot!! Some are reserved and some walk-in. The particular spot I love is already reserved for every weekend thru Aug. I was feeling pretty discouraged-----

Then I heard a new private, gated park is being rebuilt on the Missouri River 40 miles north of us. It was flooded out 2 years ago. The new owners have made wonderful changes and are putting in new water/elec/sewer at each site, a new marina, etc. We visited last weekend, picked out a site, and signed the check. Still in construction (you all know what this winter has been like). But hope to open April 15. As we visited with the other folks there we heard the same thing---one guy had been waiting 2 years to find a place for his camper, another bought his camper at the end of last summer and drove around NE looking for a place just to try it out!!!! He and his wife never did get to camp in it yet!!!!

Anyway--that's what we'll be doing this year at least. I'm a teacher and have summers off so I plan to be there a lot! DH will join when he can. (We checked and his hot spot works out there).

If there's any other Nebraska, Iowa folks out there looking---it's Riverview Park and Resort near Blair, NE. They have a Facebook page.

Happy Camping!

Peggy and I usually only go approximately 2hrs.to 3hrs. from our home. Most of our camping trips are to one of the many Georgia State parks.
We are heading out early Friday morning for a three day weekend trip.
