Looks awesome. Where are you camping? How did you prepare them? I am hungry.

We are in Michigan. We just steamed them in a pot with about 2-3" of water for about 20 minutes. Back story....I am originally from Boston. So at least once a year I have to have a seafood feast from back home. We got the lobster at the local supermarket. They had live lobster. Also prepared grilled scallops.

That sounds great. I grew up in Michigan (Saginaw) but then worked in Baltimore, San Francisco, and now Seattle. I grew to love crabs in Baltimore, so I think I'll pick up some here for our next camping trip and do just what you are doing! And in Baltimore, we steamed them just as you describe, not like the boiling that is popular with the bigger crabs here. As a salute to the NW, maybe I'll bring the smoker along and throw in some salmon... Like I said, I'm hungry!

Are the blue crabs what you are referring too? When I was in the Coast Guard stationed in New Jersey, we would net the blue claw crabs and steam them....yum!

We usually camp off the power grid and always eat good regular meals just like at home... Last skimpy meals for us was back in the 60s tent camping. Was a chore back them bringing all the good meals in with you- Having ICE back them was also another problem...
Now days all this comes included with the modern trailers - even our OFF-ROAD POPUP has all the modern convenience items
We can eat our first class meals sitting outside watching full blown high def TV way back off the power grid which we do alot....

Man they look great!
The closest thing to real lobster down here where I live is at Red Lobster!
I keep telling myself I'm going to eat one of those one day. But I don't know if I could bring myself to wearing one of those bibs or not!!

When you are camping no bibs are required just crack them open and got for it.

Yes, we ate blue crabs in Baltimore. I caught them using a hand line with a big battery clip as a sinker that also served as a way to hold the bait (cut up eel). The crabs just grabbed the the bait and I just slowly raised the line with the crabs holding onto the bait of their own, not troubled by the fact that they were being lifted up through the water. Before they broke the surface, we would scoop them with a net. Kind of like fishing without a hook and counting on the fish to hold on tight. I sure do miss eating those crabs. Don't get me wrong, I also love the big Dungeness crabs we get here in the NW, but there's something so satisfying about picking those delicious morsels out of a blue crab steamed with Old Bay. As you know, eating crabs in the East is a very social activity. Put some newspaper on the picnic table, dump out the crabs, and away you go.
We caught a big Dungeness crab off Guemes Island last year using a rented rowboat and a crab pot. Our young boys named the crab Larry and we kept him in a bucket with cold water. When suppertime came, my wife and I looked at each other anxiously. But our boys thought eating Larry was a great idea and he was delicious. I'm still puzzling over whether their reaction was a good or bad thing...

I got introduced to blue crabs in '72 after relocating to Maryland from Iowa. We'd go down to the Naval Academy with some string, a net and raw chicken, sit on the rocks and do some crabbin'. Back then a bushel of crabs cost a little more than half of what we paid for a dozen when we returned in '11. Got to say, the first guy to eat one of those critters had to be darned hungry! Ugly!
Also miss great lobsters. For several years we'd put in an advance order to Finest Kind Lobsters and meet their trucks in local parking lots to claim our live prize.
Best we can do here in the middle of Colorado out of cell phone range is the occasional Rocky Mountain Oyster dinner. Yum!
