Camping in Western Michigan
Hello Friends! The DW and I are interested in making a reservation for a long weekend in lower Western Michigan, does anyone have a recommendation for a campground along the eastern coast of Lake Michigan or slightly inland?

My wife and I camp mostly along Lake Michigan. We enjoy Holland State Park from where you can easily travel to Grand Haven and Saugatuck. South Haven is fun also but have never camped there. Our favorite is Claybanks township park which is on Lake Michigan between Whitehall and Silver Lake. Further north we camp in Ludington usually at County park, due to problems getting into state park which is one of best in Michigan. Recently spent weekend in St Joseph and had a lot of fun visiting winery's and casino in New Buffalo. Not sure about campgrounds, but we have talked about going back in summer.

Thank you very much, I will Google those venues to learn more about each of them.

Don't wait to long the state parks are filling up fast for summer weekends. I have three reservations starting Memorial weekend, July 4th week, and early August. They start booking six months out, I have been filling slots since Thanksgiving weekend. Go to the Michigan State Parks web site, they list all the campgrounds and you can see what is available and make reservations online.

Ludington is very popular but pretty good. We also enjoyed Muskegon State Park quite a bit as well for those near the lake.

Many of the state parks fill up, reservations are highly recommended.
There are LOTS of State forest campgrounds that seem little known. I use them, they are very seldom full, sometimes I'm the only one there. The real popular ones do take reservations.
They don't have hookups though, but usually have rest rooms, water and dump stations. Cost around $13 a night. A little primitive, might not be level, and larger units might be a problem. My Flight 21QB has no problem.

Other West MI options
Covert - South Haven KOA is nice. We have stayed there a couple of times. Warren Dunes is one fantastic state park but hard to get reservations in popular weekends.

yankee springs state park gun lake unit is nice. Clean modern bath rooms and a clean shallow warm lake. Theres also a casino near by if that's your thing too. Its about half way between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo.
Holland state park is where I grew up pretty much. I prefer the macatawa campground over the beach camp ground as the beach cg is basically a parking lot and very tight.
Tri-ponds family camp resort (private) is here in Allegan. LOTS OF STUFF for the kids to do. They have a nice newer pool, a swimming pond, a fishing pond a giant bounce pillow and planned activities. Allegan is a nice small community with a local grocery store and a few fast food places, but your nearest big box store would be a bit of a drive.

State parks book 6 months in advance. There are some good ones in western MI but if you want a nice private campground try:
