Camping With Pets

Does anyone have any ideas/ recommendations on the best methods to monitor temperature inside the coach? I guess what I'm looking for is something that will monitor temperature and notify us if power fails , and temperature increases. Concern is leaving our Lab in the coach when we're not there.
Any help/ recommendations will be appreciated

In New York state parks, you are not supposed to leave your pets in your campers unattended. That said, we plan to do things where we can take our pup. We have left our last pup, a very calm black lab, in the camper with the A/C fan running. We never really worried about the power failing as we were never gone more than a couple hours.

Even if the power goes out, the temp inside the camper will stay reasonable for a while.

I never leave my dog in the trailer unattended for any length of time just because of the unforeseen .

When we have to leave our dog in the RV we always leave the AC on to provide masking noise so she will not bark in reply to other dogs.

We also stop at the office and ask very nicely, to be called if there is a power outage. Never happened yet, but it could help, If it came down to it, I would authorize a break in by the park over the phone if it would not be possible to get back.

In one case we knew we had a long day away and I tipped in advance for a park employee to walk our dog. Brought her in and introduced her so they would know she is not a problem. (Beagles are great at making instant friends)

This is great information. My wife and I hadn't thought about the peak employees. Everywhere we go they are so helpful. Thanks again I appreciate your input.

We travel with 3 cats and if the weather is warm, the A/C is on. Of course, we do not have to worry about the barking or needing to take them for a walk. When we did have dogs (Great Dane & Dalmatians) we left them but no more than 3-4 hours - the Dalmatians were a handful so rarely left them at all.

Better check with the parks you plan to stay at. Most we go to the rules say if you are found leaving a pet inside your camper you will be asked to leave. They don't want barking dogs bothering everyone, I would not trust the park to call me if the power goes out. We only take the dog when we don't have plans to be gone all day from the park which isn't often.

We leave our dog a lot, for several hours at a time.

If I was concerned about it I'd get a camera monitor, plug a light into a 110v outlet. If the light is out you'll see it, and, the security monitor can be set to send you a message when the light goes out. My wifi in the trailer is connected to verizon and the batter will last all day. Just get a camera that has a battery backup or is powered from the 12V side of the RV.

More and more states are making it illegal to leave pets in cars. I think it should be extended to RV's as well. If you have a pet than plan activities to include them. After all you got them to live with you so treat them as a family member.

So, do you take your dog to the grocery store or mall with you? We left our dogs at home by themselves many times. Why is it any different with an RV (especially since we live in ours)?

And, yes, our dog is a family member. Our kids call her their sister.

This is a little old school but has been working for me for a long time.

A Freeze Alarm, old flip phone and Bluetooth adapter.
Read this post on RV.net
RV.Net Open Roads Forum: Pet Wellness - Temperature/ Power Outage Alarm

ps. I wired the Bluetooth into the rv's 12 volt system.

What you are talking about is apples to oranges. Car will heat up to dangerous temps in a matter of minutes even on 70 or 75 degree days. My TT is airconditioned and stays as comfortable as our home for long time even if the power goes out. We have camped for over 30 years and have never seen a power outage longer than 30 or 40 minutes and have never had a CG shut down the grid for repairs without giving campers a heads up the day before. We usually take our dogs with us during the day when it makes sense but leave them inside often. They do not bark at passing cars or people walking the CG loop.

Making it illegal is silly.

Maybe we need less rules and regulations. I don't need the government telling me where, when, and how I should deal with my dogs. Until the government is paying my vet and buying my dog food, they should stay out of my dogs life.

Ditto! They should stay out of all our lives. As for the dogs, I've never heard them complain about how we treat them. Pretty spoiled pooches AC and sat tv while were out for the day.

Also....

Both of our vent fans are thermostatically controlled, and will come on automatically in the event of an electrical or ac failure.

Our dogs are everything to us.

All that is required is some common sense. Government does not supply that. Think about the day that your pooch will be left behind. Hot? Boondocking? Maybe not a good idea..the genny might run out of gas.

It wouldn't have helped us this week ( but it was cold so the dog was fine) We were hiking without her in a region with no cell service.
Not to say its not a good idea but it may not always work.
