Carbon monoxide/dioxide alarm

For some reason my carbor dioxide/monoxide alarm started going off. I had to disconnect the battery to get it to stop. The trailer is just parked in the driveway with no propane bottles on. I was late for work and it was dark out so disconnecting the battery was the quickest solution. Is there a way to fix this when I reconnect the battery if the alarm is still going off. Thanks. I don't believe it runs off a small battery like the smoke alarm does

It's just a carbon MONOxide detector, no such thing as a carbon DIoxide detector in RVs. If there was, it would be going off every time you open a pop can or exhale. Carbon dioxide makes your drinks fizzy, carbon monoxide will kill you. Yours is probably a combination CO/Propane detector, and is hard wired into the trailer's 12 volt system.

These devices have set life-spans, something like 5 years or so. If it goes off without any known reason, it's probably time to replace it. There's a date on the back, "Replace by XXXX". Your local RV dealer will have the needed parts, and swapping it out is easy if you're halfway handy.

What year is your unit? A permanent disconnect is not a good idea. Those alarms are on a 5 @ 6 year replacement. Something did set it off or a faulty unit. Then just replace it or if under warranty contact your dealer.

Low battery will also set the little buggers off. You said the RV was in your driveway, but was it on shore power too?

IF you remove the unit, the mfr puts a replacement date on the back of the unit. At least mine had a date on it. Only made it 4 years of the designed 5 years... I should have sent it back for a warranty replacement.

Please replace all smoke alarms, propane gas alarms, and carbon monoxide detectors in your RV every 5-7 years.

P.S. That goes for your stick and brick home as well.

It was plugged in so I don't think low battery is the issue. The rv is 10 years old so probably need a new one. I'll go take a look when I get some time. THanks

I thought it was plugged in but now I'm not so sure. It was not plugged into my house. Not sure how long it has been unplugged. I took it out and found date of February 2006. That was the manufacture date. I reconnected the battery and plugged it in to the house and it's not gking off. Hopefully it was just a really low battery. Although I should replace it anyhow. Thanks. You sparwood guys are smarter than you look. (Coming from a cranbrook guy) 😁

I just went thru this last May, the carbon Monoxide detector has a life span of 5-6 years. Easy to replace.

I know that the new Smoke Detectors come with a 5 yr battery/life, I have one in our RV.
But Carbon Monoxide, I don't know, does it have to be connected to the house battery for some reason. My house battery is usually dead. Or does it also come with a 5-yr battery?

The CO monitor uses the TT's battery for its source of power. If your battery is usually dead how does it operate your trailer brakes while traveling. If you pull your main fuse by the battery(s) after each camping trip and your battery is charged from the return trip, it will maintain its voltage for months. If it has been dead more than a few times it probably will not hold a charge. Probably time to replace it and start a battery maintenance program.

Ours is powered by the rv battery.

I had same prob on brand new 2018 so it IS NOT AGE OF DETECTOR problemo. I took a wrench and disconnected the negative side of the battery and unplugged my external power cord and it stopped immediately. I reconnected it and the alarm is working as normal. Strange but then again with all technology there are unexplained phenomenon like my $4,000 4K LG TV that echoes the sound sometimes and the finger wond thing is all over the TV sometimes.
