Carrying Bicycles
Do people have good solutions for carrying bicycles when towing a trailer. The Select 28U we have bought has a rear bumper but it is only rated for 100 lb. The spare tire is already on the bumper.
Our previous trailer was an Award Classic 30 with no bumper. We ended up putting a front hitch on the 2003 Chev truck.
It looks like we may need to do that with the new combination.
Are there any other good solutions?
Thanks
Peter

Hi Peter,
I know that Jayco makes a bike rack that is an option on some models. I don't know if it will fit on a 28u. I'm sure you could get a fabricator to build something that would fit into the two steel tubes the frame is welded to.
Nice to see someone else with a 28u on the forum. I was surprised to see so few people owned them. With the big rear window I thought they would be more popular. We will be empty nesters soon and that's what made the design work for us. Great for two when we travel but can accommodate more if need be.
I liked the Award trailers and always wanted to buy one. I was sorry to see them close. They were a pretty unique trailer. I think they had their layout similar to the 28u. Search the forum for ideas on bike racks. We put our bikes in the truck. It has a canopy. I take the front wheels off to make them fit. Good luck

Our fiver has a receiver hitch which we use for our bike carrier- The receiver hitch is frame mounted and is separate from the sewer hose bumper- JMHO- DD

I use this "Curt RV Bumper Hitch" which mounts to my rear bumper. Recently, due to concerns expressed by others, I had the rear bumper reinforced (sorry I don't have any photos yet)... but what I did was have the existing welds ground down and redone. I then had four pieces of steel welded on a 45 degree angle between the rear cross member and the bumper itself. It's very strong now with no chance of tearing off due to torsion brought on by the weight and bouncing of the bikes.
I will post pictures next time I get the trailer out.

The BHLT rear bedroom has a utility door. Both bunks flip up and we can fit 5 bicycle's back there. Using moving blankets and Styrofoam blocks, they stay put and do not mark up the walls.

I tried a front hitch to carry bikes on my previous tow vehicle (2002 Suburban K2500 8.1).
It changed the airflow enough to trip the check engine light. After several trips I abandoned using the front hitch for bikes.

I had always just put them in the TT, and wrapped them in an old comforter so they didn't rub the inside or scratch it.
Our new rig will have the slide out carrier, but I don't know how much we'll use it for bikes - even with that carrier, bikes for 6 kids (+2 parents) takes up a bunch of space

I made a rack that bolts to bed rails of Truck and they are 23 inches high put Yakima rails across them and put yakima racks on cross bars carry two bikes with tires on and still have bed of truck to haul wood , coolers or what ever I need works good. Only need to haul two bikes but there is room on bars and would work for at least 4 bikes.

Thanks for all the comments. Last winter we used a front hitch and carrier for our bikes since the Award trailer had no rear bumper.
Since the Jayco 28U bumper is only rated for 100 lb I have now had a front hitch installed on the new 2012 Chev.
We had no over heat issues with the 2003 Chev - hopefully the same will hold true for this one.
I am looking at changing bike racks since the type that hangs the bikes from the crossbars lets them blow and swing too much .
Peter

This is what we are using. It works really well. Distributes the load across bumper. I've checked my welds after each tow with bikes and they look good.
