Dual propane tank question

Greetings all!! I just returned from the final trip of the season, and as expected, northern Michigan didn't disappoint. The warmest it ever got in 4 days/nights was 28 F. My TT has dual 20 pound LP tanks, which I had filled an hour before we left home. I was under the impression that only 1 cylinder was to be opened at a time, with the regulator pointing towards the "in service" cylinder (green dot towards bottle, green dot in the middle, orange dot towards the "reserve"). When that tank runs out of propane, you close the valve on the in service cylinder, turn the regulator toward the reserve bottle (thus making it the in service bottle), open the valve on the full cylinder (so the orange dot now becomes green, the middle dot becomes green again, and the empty tank now has an orange dot). That's what I did this past week, and I noticed immediately that the furnace wasn't firing up (I got the 3 blinking light error code), the stove wouldn't work, and we were freezing. So, I ran to a store in the nearest town and exchanged my propane tank, installed it and we were in business again. However, I still had a full tank of propane on the other side. Did I misunderstand the owners manual? Anyone have some insight? Happy Camping!!

My TT has an automatic transfer, when one tank is empty it switches to the other tank. I know from the past that if you open the tank valve to fast, that there is a safety valve that will close, not allowing the gas to pass. Just open up the tanks VERY slowly to avoid the problem. Not sure if this is your problem, just my 2 cents. OPEN VALVE SLOWLY
