Electric steps stuck

I was away from Jayco class "c" for about six weeks. I return home and head out to the RV for a look. Everything is working fine except the electric steps did not extend when I opened the door. I have never had any problems with these steps and last used them about six weeks ago. RV starts fine, fuse box/circuit breakers appear okay. Now the auxiliary battery was low so I did put that on a charger for a few hours. I got on my back with a flashlight and checked for any loose wires under the steps and even banged on it with a hammer a few times in case it was frozen up with any rust. Nothing has corrected it so far. The weather here in coastal South Carolina has been very rainy, wet, humid and soupy the last three weeks. Perhaps rusted in the up position ? What can I do next on my own ?

I'm not sure how it works, but I would think when you open or close the door a switch must be activated I would check to see if the switch was sticking or such.

X3 If you don't have any luck with trying to free up the switch, check the wires leading to it with a volt meter. You probably have 3 wires, one power, and the other two grounded through the reversible motor, one for each direction. See if there is power on any of the wires and go from there.

I believe he was asking if you have to have the vehicle's emergency brake engaged to make the steps extend when opening the door

Did you ever solve your problem? I had the same thing happen. There is a small black magnet on the bottom of the screen door which needs to be opposite from the sending unit on the door frame. You should see two grEy wires in the pocket with the sender. Giggle them a bit.

You can see what I am referring to by googling KIWI STEPS.

I can say from very recent experience - check the crimp connectors. They are a lousy way to make connections in an outdoor environment. Mine caused my step to stop working... As soon as I have time, I'm going to clean up that rat's nest of wires around the step and solder all of the currently-crimped connections.

Warning - make sure your appendages are out of the way if the step is powered and you start jiggling things!

Good luck!

Thanks to all for the advice. Unfortunately, the job has got me on an extended assignment away from home base until mid August. But, I plan on trying some of tips mentioned above to get my steps working. I'll post the results as soon as I can.

Just an update on my steps. After being away for seven weeks, I come home yesterday and of course, head out to the RV to look at my step problem. To my surprise, they immediately come down. I'm happy of course, but I can't explain why today they are working and seven weeks ago they were not. Anyway, thanks for the advice and I will try some preventive maintenance.
